Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Have you heard about this? (cow's milk question)

I am visiting my parents and had asked my mom to pick up some whole milk because my LC reccomended cooking DS oatmeal with it.  I also asked her to pick up some whole yogurt for him.

I guess her neighbor informed her that I was going to make him fat and that all the reccomendations are now nonfat skim milk for babies.  All my research has said to ween to whole cow's milk when he is 12 months or older.

It may be different depending on LOs size and weight gain - not sure but DS has had a really hard time gaining wt since he started crawling/walking so I am trying to fatten him up anyways!  Guess according to her I may end up with an obese child. Stick out tongue

  • I'm pretty sure you're not suppose to give reduced fat milk until at least 2 YO.  Then they can have 2%.

What did your LO's physician say to do?  I've always heard that you give baby whole milk.

  • I just talked to my friend about this.  Keira is allergic to milk but normally you would give them whole milk from 1-2 years old then after that 2%.
  • I've always read whole milk until 2 then you can go to 2% (or whatever you want). I personally, would only drink skim, but LO's NEED the fat.
  • With DD1 my pedis direction was whole milk until they are 2 and then he put her on skim milk.  She is actually underweight, but advised at 2 years old, they can be on low fat or skim millk, but before then, they need the fat.  I have a ton of friends with kids and they all were advised this as well.  I would not listen to that neighbor.  Unless your pedi advises something different, I would go with what they tell you.

  • I was told to give him whole milk - just to cook up his oatmeal right now.  When he is around a year I can switch to whole milk instead of BM.

Good to know about their brains needing the fat.  She is a VERY outspoken women and if I can get a word in I will tell her that.

Babies need fat-- their brains need it for development. I think that neighbor is very misinformed.

Ask any pedi and they will tell you the same.  I agree that your neighbor is very misinformed... he needs whole milk.

  • I have not heard to give skim milk to a baby under 2.

I have heard that the best option is to give breastmilk until 2 and then 2% after that.  This is the opinion of a doctor named Joel Furhman who wrote a book called "Disease Proof Your Child".

  • Your mom's neighbor is wrong. Babies need fat for brain development. I do believe the AAP recommends switching to 2% after age 2, but I could be wrong.
