Appts. after 30 weeks??

How often will you be going for appts. beginning at 30 week mark?  I just had my first appt. at new OB today and was told I will go every 2 weeks until week 36, then every week.  I only had to go once a month until 36 weeks at old OB.  I was practically in tears because I have to carve 3 hours out of my day for these appts. and work them between my dd's preschool and my part time job.  I asked why every two weeks and the nurse practicioner just said, "not sure why, just how we do it here"  I also have to get more blood work because they want some rubeola test and hep. C test that my old OB doesn't do. Plus an ultrasound for NO REASON.  Also have to get an STD internal test because my old OB didn't require that either.  I am so pissed and wish I could just go back to old OB.  My MIL is an LPN there.  Stupid new insurance sucks! Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: Appts. after 30 weeks??

  • My OB told me at 28 weeks I'd start going every two weeks. I do think that they start weekly appointments at 36 as well (i'll know when I get there).  It's pretty typical and the STD stuff is usually done early on.  I had to do it at my RE and then again at the OB.

Why do your appointments take 3 hours?  I recommend doing them at the beginning or end of your workday to make it easier on you.

  • I hear ya about the every two weeks thing. I'm suppose to start after this appt, but luckily my OB said that since I'm doing so good I get to every 3 weeks until 36 weeks.
  • They take 3 hours because I have to give myself an hour to get there.  Then waiting time and appt. is another hour and then a 45 minute drive home.  I work at 4:30 pm and dd has preschool at 12:45 pm.  So making appts. is very difficult.  They are the closest OB practice my new insurance will cover.
  • I was once a month until 28 weeks, then every other week until 36. Once a week til EDD.

  • I think my 27 week appt. was my first on the every 2 week schedule. I think my 35 week appt. will be my first on the every week schedule. Before 27 weeks I only went once a month.

  • I have pretty much the same routine with the OB office-weight, fundal height, bp check, urine to check for glucose and heart beat. I see the perinatologist more than the ob.  I go to perinatologist office weekly though for the same testing as you. Add in a visit to the endo every two weeks and going to the doctor is a part time job.  The ob and the peri are in the same building, but sometimes I can't get appointments on the same day.  It kind wears me out going to work for a couple of hours, go to the doctor, go back to work then back to the doctor then back home.  I try not to do this, but sometimes I have.  I like going to the OB though, he is very friendly and has a good bedside manner and never seems rushed!
  • I'll start going every 2 weeks at 32 weeks.

    Same for me.

  • I would explain to a Dr how difficult it is for you to make the apts. If the apts are adding stress to your life, maybe they can alter the schedule for you. I'm wondering why I have to go in each week after 36 weeks myself.
  • The appointments are to monitor your health and the health of your baby.  I really don't think it's something to be "in tears" about.

My first appt was 12 weeks.  I then went once a month until 30 weeks and now I go every 2 weeks.  At 36 weeks I will go weekly until 40.  If I make it that far I'll start going daily or 2x per week.

  • Well misseru I did find it tear worthy but thanks for your opinion. 3 year olds don't typically enjoy being in the car for 2 hours a day and at dr. appts. I have no one to watch her and if I had know I would have to switch OB's this late I would have done some major planning to find a qualified sitter. Not to mention how exhausting driving, walking far to the appt., entertaining dd, rushing to preschool, and then to my part time job is.

Is it not possible to arrange with DD's preschool to take her early on the days you have appointments?

  • No they can't take her early at preschool.  I wish they could.  The program is only for 1 1/2 hours a day.  She just turned 3 and we decided to try it out.
