Ear infection help

Cooper has had a stupid ear infection for about a month now.  We're about to finish our second antibiotic and I still think he isn't clear.  He's not overly fussy but last night he would be fine playing and suddenly start crying.  Not the "I'm pissed because you fussed at me" cry but more of a "I'm hurting/something is wrong" cry.  And he's digging in his ear like crazy.

Should I wait to see if he gets fussier, or just take him in and get another freaking antibiotic?  Ugh...I'm sick of going to the pedi!!

Re: Ear infection help

  • If the continual antibiotics aren't even helping it, I would ask for a referral to see an ENT.  Obviously what they are doing isn't helping.  :/   Poor Cooper.

  • Are you giving him the pink amoxicillian?  If so, you may need to take him in and get the white stuff (once a day of 10 days).  It's a little stronger.  Also, if you don't already, ask for ear numbing drops that will help relieve the pain.

We actually skipped the pink stuff this time and went right to the white one.  Then we moved to a different white one that is twice a day.

Poor pumpkin!  Hope he's better soon.  I'd consider seeing an ENT too.  I didn't know that the white stuff is stronger...DD is on 21 days of it right now for a severe sinus/ear infection.

  • Ditto others, you may want to take him to an ENT.

I always refer to Dr Sears and this was good info when I was was dealing with Ally's ear infection(s).

  • I'd try taking him to a chiropractor.

I don't remember what side of town you are on, my chiro specializes in kids too.  He's in the Champions area, Dr. Wolff.

  • I know when Zachary had an ear infection that wasn't responding to oral antibiotics, the doctor ordered rocephin shots.  It cleared up that ear infection, but in the end we had to resort to tubes for his recurring infections.
  • Another vote here for the ENT. It gets to a point where there is potential for harm from too many antibiotics as well. If you've gone through 2 rounds of strong antibiotics, tubes may be in your future.

We did 2 rounds of rocephin shots. Not fun. DS also ended up getting tubes. The tubes didn't completely stop the ear infections but they are not nearly as frequent as before.

  • I had the same issue with my youngest daughter when she was around 5. She just kept getting them. I started giving her probiotics and she stopped getting them all together. I buy the central market brand "probiotic quattro" in the refrigerated vitamin section. You can open the capsules and sprinkle it on his food if he is too young to swallow them. I give one each to both of my girls every morning with breakfast and they rarely get sick. Also, when my daughter got ear infections, I would slice open a clove of garlic, wrap it in cheesecloth, and place it in her ear. I don't know how or why, but it took the pain away. I found this remedy on an all natural website and figured it could not hurt to try - it worked!
