I did a bad thing

You all know that rice cereal gave my boys crazy constipation, and over the last few weeks I've been trying other grains with the same problem. There wasn't a single grain approved for their age range that didn't block them up for days.

So then I saw  a box of wheat cereal at the store, labeled 6+ months. I know most baby food sites say you're not supposed to introduce wheat before 8/9 months, but I'd tried everything else and we don't have a history of food allergies, so I bought some.

I gave the boys a very small amount and they loved it, and afterward...no constipation! It was like magic! So now that's their breakfast after they have their bottles - wheat cereal with pureed fruit.

*ducks head and waits for hurled stones*

Side note: after I gave them the cereal, I found this study which says that as long as there isn't a family food allergy history, delaying introduction of cereal grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats) doesn't decrease wheat allergy risk and may even increase it. It's from Pediatrics so the source is good - anyone know if the info is still current?

  • Wait...what's bad?

LOL, seriously, when I opened up your post and started reading, the following went through my head because I was thinking something bad happened:

    imageredshoegirl:

You all know that rice cereal gave my boys crazy constipation, and over the last few weeks I've been trying other grains with the same problem.

"Oh crap, she must've given them something to fix the constipation and they had unstoppable diarrhea instead!"

"Oh crap, they must've ended up having a crazy allergic reaction to it! Like hives...or diarrhea...or both!"

    "Which THEN gave them diarrhea?!???"

    "Wait, no diarrhea?"

LOL. I'd say you did exactly what was right and best for you lil pirates and I'm glad they're pooping well now =)

  • You found something that works, congrats! I tried rice cereal with Bella and it gave her TERRIBLE constipation too. She didn't poop for about 5 days and I ended up having to give her a glycerin suppository to get her to go= not fun for baby, mama or daddy!

Kids can have reactions to anything at any age. Bella had cinnamon a few times to season squash and then all of a sudden she broke out in a rash everywhere from the cinnamon! We've since reintroduced it and she's done fine. We watch her closely each time we give it and don't allow her to have anything that we don't prepare ourselves to be sure we know what she's getting. I have terrible allergies and have reactions to many things so I knew there was a possibility it could happen to her with something, I just didn't know what or when.

LOL this made me laugh because the first time one of the boys poo'd after the wheat cereal, I thought, "OMG it's given them diarrhea!" Then I realized that no, the poo was totally fine - I'd just gotten used to them having those horrible rubber constipation poo that normal squishiness seemed like diarrhea. Stick out tongue

  • haha....you're not a horrible mommy... you gave it to them, it doesn't cause constipation and they're fine! i have heard about that study about delaying certain foods leading to an increased risk of allergies and i am not sure what the current/most popular thought is, to be honest.  we have a pedi appt tomorrow and i plan to ask about this and the introduction of certain foods like nuts b/c we have a history of allergies and i actually tested positive on a skin test for peanut allergies.  used to break out in hives but it didn't start until grad school and only lasted for a few years...weird huh?
  • I don't thinkit's a bad thing at all - you tried something and it worked.  YAY!

I really dislike that this parenting thing is mainly trial and error, but that's what we have to do, so we do it :)

    congrats!!

Let me know what you find out about this, because I'm really curious what the current advice is. I've been reading recently that postponing introduction of nuts until a child is 1-2 years old can actually increase the odds of an allergy (unless there's a family history such as you have). It's all so confusing! Tongue Tied
