If you had a "growth ultrasound"

My doctor was worried about my belly measuring bigger then is should last week. I had an ultrasound Saturday and the tech "estimated" him weighing in at 9lbs and 8oz.  I want to try to have him vaginally if I can , but I am starting to get scared of how big he is.  The doctor said today if I had not made any progress by a week from today we would talk about an induciton.

So my question is .....How many of your lo's were around the weight the ultrasound tech estimated.

I didn't have a growth u/s, but my doc was spot-on with his estimation. He said 6 1/2 to 7 lbs and she was 6 lbs 13 oz. I have heard of some women having the baby be as much as a pound below what the tech guessed--or a pound above. No telling just what little Crosby will be!

My MIL naturally delivered 5 of her 6 babies and all but a couple of them were in the 9 lb range. She's about your height. You can doooo it!

Thanks :) I am going to try as hard as I can !!

  • They did a few extra ultrasounds to make sure DD was growing at a normal rate (she had a two vessel cord). The last one said she was around 8 lbs and she ended up being 6 lbs, 12 oz.

My grandma's babies were all 9-10lbs and she had all of them vaginally. Do not be scared. You can do it!

  • They estimated DS was around 8lb. 9oz but said they could be off by a pound in either direction.  He was 7lb. 12oz at birth then was down to 7lb 1oz after the first day.  I wouldn't think too much of the "growth u/s"

  • DD #1 measured about 1lb less than what she actually was.

DD #2 measured about 8oz. more than what she actually was.

  • I had one 2 days before induction and it predicted 8 pounds.  He was 7.8.
  • Thanks for the replies ladies. I think I am just being an over worrier.

  • Ella was over one pound smaller than her estimate.  She weighed 6 lbs 2 oz at birth, and was born one day after her due date.

She did always measure on the smaller side though.

  • They predicted he would be 7 lbs but was born 8 lbs.
  • Both my babies had growth ultrasounds because I was measuring behind, and the ultrasound estimates were off by quite a bit (estimate was bigger than baby turned out to be).

DD1 had a growth u/s at 36 weeks and they said she was then measuring 5 lb 11 ounces.  She was born at 4 weeks later at 40w2d weighing 5 lb 12.6 ounces.

DD1 had a growth u/s at 37 weeks and they said she was then measuring 6 lb 14 ounces.  She was born at 2 weeks later at 39w2d weighing 6 lb 9.5 ounces.

FWIW though, for both girls my midwife guessed the baby's size based on feeling my belly and feeling the baby when she checked positioning, and she was pretty darn accurate both times!

  • I had to be induced early for pre-e. That morning, they did the NST and predicted 6lbs 15oz. He was born that evening and was exactly that weight!

  • At 34 weeks I had an ultrasound and she was measuring 8lbs 6oz. She was born the day after my due date and she was 7lbs 15oz. I wouldn't worry about it. They can be off by a couple of pounds.

  • Mine was pretty much right on. A week before LO was born the ultrasound said he was right at 7, so they told me he would probably be 7.5lbs when born. He was 7lbs 6oz at birth.
  • At my growth u/s they said he was about 6lbs 10oz two weeks later he was born 8lbs 11oz.

  • My tech estimated about 7-7.5 lbs and DD was 6lb 15 oz. So pretty accurate. But I have heard other people say that their doctors were wayyyyy off, so don't freak out. It can go a pound either way.

  • My son was estimated at about 8.5lbs and ended up at 7.14lbs.  He was just very long and took up lots of space, but was thin.  I also had a lot of swelling so when you were looking at me, you expected I had like 5 watermelons in there.

  • Nathan was a lb bigger than what the tech said but the doctor guessed with his hands on my belly and he was spot on right at 7lbs. My mom had all big babies viginally her biggest was 11lbs even
  • I had a growth u/s at 36 weeks because my fundal height hadn't increased in a few weeks. At the time, the measurements said LO was already 7lbs. The tech said she thought that was high and would be surprised if I had a baby bigger than 7.5 lbs based on the size DH and I were when we were born. Sure enough, 4 weeks later DS was 7lbs 6 oz, so the u/s estimate was too big.

  • Ultrasound on the Monday before I delivered said he was 6 lb 5 oz, he was born on the next Sunday and weighed 6 lb 11 oz, so it would have been right on for the time frame.

But, like so many others have said, they can be off by a pound or more.  My DH was almost 11 lbs when he was born, and MIL delivered him all natural - she said he was her biggest baby, but also her easiest to deliver, so big babies aren't always the worst!  I had just assumed that DS would be big like his daddy, but I guess I got lucky.  Even so, I always thought, I have something massive coming out of a hole that's pretty small - it's going to hurt regardless; would I really notice a difference of a couple pounds?

Good point. I think I am the most worried because I have made zero progress. My doctor seems to think it is going to stay that way. Here's to hoping he starts moving down a little bit before the 25th.

  • Mine was estimated to be 9lbs 2 oz after an ultrasound. He turned out to be 9lbs 13 oz. My OB did not want to hear my pleas for a natural delivery. He did a risk assessment based on mine and LO's size and said that we had a higher chance of encountering shoulder dystocia. I didn't want to take his word for it so I got a second, third and fourth opinions. They all concurred. I ended up switching OB's on the day I delivered anyway!

As upset as I am that I didn't deliver vaginally, there was no way that this kid was going to come out any other way then a c-section. His head was enormous, and when I got to L&D the Dr. said that he never dropped because my pelvis was too narrow.

I'm glad that I ended up with a c-section without having to labor for a zillion hours. It allowed me to heal quicker and avoid the emotional trauma some people have gone through.

  • Oh, I also wanted to add that at 34 weeks when I asked the US tech what DD's estimated weight would be at 40 weeks, she said that I didn't even want to know because she would be so big... yeah... sure.

And, during delivery all of the nurses told me I was going to have to push for 2-3 hours at LEAST and the dr almost gave me a c-secion because they thought she was too big. They ended up shutting off my epidural and I could finally feel enough to push and she ended up only being 7lbs 15oz. When they announced her weight, everyone in the room went, "REALLY?!"

So, doctors, nurses, and ultrasound techs can all be wrong!

Thanks for sharing.  I am having the same problem he has not moved down at all. We had to have the ultrasound partly bc he is so squished  up into my ribs. The doctor could not tell if his head was down or not.  He called me today and said we would see if I made any progress by Monday and if not we needed to see what we were going to do.  I really just want him to come as safely as possible.

I found this site to be really helpful when doing my research. Go down the entire list of contents. Be sure to google "cephalo-pelvic incompatibility" especially if you're petite/narrow hipped.

  • I had a growth scan 3 days before I had K and they estimated her at 6.5 pounds.  She ws 6lbs 2oz at birth.

Growth scans can be VERY accurate if you have a good tech (or a good doctor - my high risk specialist took all of my u/s measurements) and a high quality ultrasound machine.

  • I did not, but my dr thought DS would be between 7-8lbs.  He was exactly 7lbs 8oz.

  • I had an ultrasound at 38 weeks that estimated LO at 9 lbs, 14 oz.

I am only 5'2", so my midwife was worried and sent me to a bigger hospital for another ultrasound at 39 weeks. Estimated weight: 9 lbs even.

LO was born via c-section after a 4-day induction at 41 weeks 2 days weighing 9 lbs, 14 oz., 22 inches long. Unless she didn't grow at all in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy, the first ultrasound overestimated her weight, but the second one was probably just about right.

ETA: I was not dilated or effaced when my induction began and LO had not dropped all the way into my pelvis. If you are in a similar situation, the chances of having a c-section after a failed induction are very high. If your doc is comfortable letting you wait at all, I would wait. If LO really is too big to fit, you'll end up with a c-section anyway, so letting your body progress on its own (as long as you and LO are healthy) won't hurt.

  • The day before my induction I had a growth u/s to see if there was any reason why I wasn't dialating (I was 41.5 weeks) and they estimated that my LO would be 8 lbs. 1 oz. and when she was born the next day she was 7 lbs. 7 oz.

  • DS was measuring 11lbs on hid growth ultrasound... we had a c-section to be safe. He was 9lbs 15oz (a pound off), and I'm not sure if he would have made it vaginally or not... DD was 8lbs 14oz, and no problems with her vaginally. GL! Don't get too worried about it, but keep your options open.

I am about 5'4 and he has yet to drop and my cervix is still high and rock hard. I would like to try to be induced before we go straight to a c section. He seems to be ok with me waiting until my appointment on Monday.  Hopefully waiting will help my body kick it into gear.

  • I went in at 41 weeks to be induced, and after 24 hrs of cervadil an absolutely no change, they did a growth scan. DS was measuring 12 pounds, so we headed to the operating room. He ended up weighing 10lbs 15oz. After that, I am glad the induction failed. I wanted a vaginal birth, but I definitely didnt want to labor for 20 hours and end up with a c section anyway.

  • I had one at 39 weeks, I think because we were flagged for a shoulder dystosia study one of the dos at my practice was doing.  They estimated DD to be 8 lbs 12 oz then.  I delivered at 40 weeks 4 days, which meant according to their estimates she would have been over 10 lbs.  She was 7 lbs 8 oz at birth.  So not close at all.
