PSA: fedex email scam

so just as i start to embark on my babywearing and wrap-buying experience, i get hit with a fedex email scam. here is my story *cue dramatic "dun dun!"*

i was awaiting two packages in the mail; one mei tai and one loaner wrap. i checked my email and i had gotten a message with the subject "FedEx Delivery Failure Package####" with some slew of numbers and a tracking code. the message said that they attempted to deliver a package to me but there was a problem and i had to come in to the local fedex office to pick it up. there was a zip file attached which were supposed to include the delivery and tracking information.

now i want to tell you all that i was smart enough to sense something was up, and maybe i was, sorta, but i was also really really anxious for my wrap/MT and it JUST SO HAPPENED that a fedex truck had JUST DROVE BY our house (for real). so i attempt to open the zip file. it wouldn't open, and again, red flags should be going off here, but for goodness sake i am a desperate babywearer and i thought one of my packages was lost so i'm practically hysterical at the thought of fedex holding one of my wraps hostage. then husband said something about checking their website and as i did that he called fedex and yeah... it was a scam. fedex will never send out an email with a zip file attachment.

so far, it looks like the zip file did not download and did not wreak havoc on my computer. but i wanted to warn everyone that could possibly be as dim as i was-- don't attempt to open these things. at least not before checking with a credible source.

the end.

No I thought it was pretty suspicious from the start since the post office can't do anything efficiently in the first place.  Then I also thought about the fact that I hadn't ever given them my email address.

No I was suspicious too so I googled "package tracking scam" and found out it's been going around.
