Hey friends. I'm in desperate need of some hair color and I want to go darker so I was thinking about just picking up a box of something at the drug store and saving the $125 that my colorist costs...
Anyone have good out of the box experiences or should I suck it up and get it professionally done?
Re: Boxed hair color?
I use the box alot. I have used the following with good exp....Natural Instincts (which is temporary 30 washes), LOreal Excellance Creme, and Loreal Couleur Experte. All of them I have had great results with. The only time i have had a bad exp was when I used, Loreal Feria. I had blond highlignts in my hair and used a color that Irridesnces (sp) in it. It caused all my highlights to go Gray. No kidding. I was totally freaking out. However I just put a new box of teh Excellance Creme on my hair and it was perfect.
Let me know if you have any questions.
I almost always dye my hair from a box and get pretty good results, and I mostly use the cheap stuff (Clairol Nice & Easy). For me, the key is knowing if my hair leans "cool" or "warm". My hair has a lot of gold/warm undertones, so when I go lighter I have to stay away from anything that says gold, otherwise I end up with orange hair! The green/cool undertones of an ash blonde creates a more neutral result. When I go darker it's easier because golden-brown just turns out a little redder than the box, but it's still much better than orange.
Sometimes the cool browns look mousy on me, so I just pick a neutral.
Also, I don't know how much hair you have, but it couldn't hurt to have another box on hand just in case one isn't enough. If you don't need it, you'll have it for your next touch up in 6-8 weeks. Good luck!
Hey, lady, there's nothing wrong with orange hair.
I've been using Henna and Indigo for a while now and I love the results. Whenever I used box or even salon dye my hair would fall out in clumps for days! It sucks to shower and look down and see over a dozen strands of hair at your feet. With Henna/Indigo my hair actually comes out healthier than it did before I dye it. I will never go back to chemical dyes now.
Btw, Henna will give you red/orange/strawberry blond hair with some brown options. Indigo will give you different shades of dark brown/black. Right now I mix one part dark red Henna with one part brown for a sort of auburn result.
I box my hair every-so-often. I usually use Nice and Easy because I've had bad, non-coverage experiences with anything L'Oreal.
Also, I've used Henna A LOT and that, I love. Only thing is, I don't feel like the color lasts for that long. It's more semi-permanent.

OMG, Ashley I would kill for your hair! I just dyed my hair red recently and I'm sad b/c it isn't "orange" enough. Trust me, this was a bad orange I'm talking about.
I was just giving you a hard time!
I personally would never color my hair myself again. About 10 years ago I lived in a shore town for a summer and didn't make time to go to a colorist in the city. After 4 months of at home coloring, my hair turned a lovely shade of violet. OK, so it was just a violet tint, but I'm the furthest thing from a goth chick, so it was unacceptable. I ended up having to go to a salon to have corrective coloring done that took 7 hours.
Speaking of...I just had my hair done this past Saturday and I went darker. I hate it
