We waited until our DD was 6 months to start solids for two reasons:one she is small and the second she has allergies. She's been eating rice cereal for a week now and we just started sweet potatos. She is not interested! She hardly ate the cereal so we thought a little flavor might help.
No way! she whines, closes her mouth, and throws her arms to hit the spoon away. My DH even ate some to encourage her!
when did your LOs like food? It seems like what I read is that most LOs gobble it up. hmmmm
Re: solids fail... i'm lost!
Ours was into food right away, but finding food he actually liked took some trial. I would try something a bit different - we started with apples. They are a bit sweeter and you can make them have a more watery texture. I've found that the starchier foods take a bit of time for DS to start to like.
Also, I read somewhere that it can take up to 10 different tries for babies to enjoy food, so it might just be that your LO doesn't enjoy the texture or taste of the food yet.
Just be persistent, she'll get the hang of it.
Side note: we didn't follow any particular order of food (ie green > yellow > orange) or anything, I just went with what we liked first. From what I've read tastes are genetic. GL!
With my DD1, we tried at 4 months and she wasn't remotely ready. We tried again at 6 months and she hated it (cried, etc). She caught on at 7 months. We just kept trying every couple days and tried to keep it positive (aka not shove food in her mouth if she was screaming).
She turned into a great, veggie/fruit-loving eater - so no lasting effects of a 'later-start' on solids, haha.
We started rice cereal and oatmeal around 5.5 months....just started veggies at 6 mo. He doesn't like anything we've given him so far (peas, butternut squash). He really isn't into solids much at all. I hear it could take up to 10 tries for a baby to like a certain food, so don't give up.
If he starts to cry or really isn't into it, we stop. I'm hoping he catches on soon!
I started at 5 months. My son is now 3 years old and I think he eats 5 foods. 6 if you count cookies as a food group. On the other hand, my friend started off with a daughter who hated foods but who is now 3 and eats anything put in front of her. Right now, you don't know if you have a picky eater or just a slow starter.
All you can do is keep offering food to them. Maybe they will like it- I've been told it can take up to 10 times of offering something to a child before they will try it. Good luck!
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again
My first son gobbled up that rice cereal the first time we gave it to hiim just past 4 months. After 2 weeks on that, he gobbled up every baby food we introduced and has loved food ever since. I expected 2nd son to be like that. Nope. Took a month of trying cereal every other day to get him to finally swallow a bite. But more ended up on his bib than in his mouth and he'd lick it rather than open his mouth over the spoon. Till finally last weekend and now he LOVES it. So we introduced green beans this week and he liked them. Just did peas today. they were more of a hit.
So he's getting it. Every kid is different. Just keep trying. She'll get it.
With DD some things she had no interest in and fussed, so I just kept trying and made it fun and interesting for her, almost like a game. The more you keep trying to introduce to LO solids, the more familiar the concept will become. Maybe you could put milk on a spoon and just feed the milk with a spoon to get used to the difference. Maybe the spoon might be the issue, since LO is so used to sucking to get food????
You might also want to try introducing the nuby net things that you can put food in and they gnaw on it??? We put ice cubes, or fruit in it and DD loves it, and since it's not as formal as a "meal" maybe you'll have better luck?
