NBR: Advent Calendar's

Do any of y'all do an advent calendar or did you have one when growing up?

I love this one by Pottery Barn

However, I am not wanting to pay that much for it.  I am thinking I could probably make it or something similar anyway but not in time for Christmas this year.  So I am going to put it on my project to do list for next year.

My main question is what do you usually put in there?  I never had one growing up, so I am kind of clueless as to what you can put in there.

Re: NBR: Advent Calendar's

  • We had the traditional one you just peel back the number and a Bible verse was underneath, and that's what I have for Lucy too. But something sweet my mother always did was put an Advent treat each day in my lunchbox. It was always so nice to open my lunchbox and there would be a new pencil, a little chocolate, some new earrrings, etc. She would also write me little note letting me know she loved me. I cherish those memories!

Something I started last year, since it was Lucy's first Christmas, was a Jesus Tree. I printed out enough Bible verses with all the different names of Jesus on them and each night, we would sit around the tree, pull a card from the box, hang it on the tree and then read from the Bible where the verse came from. It was great, even my husband loved it and the tree was gorgeous by the end of Advent!

Sorry to have rambled! Oh..we also have an Advent wreath where you light the candle each Sunday until Christmas!

  • You're right - they can be expensive.  I bought one a couple of years ago at Target after Christmas for really cheap.  Since last year it was just me and DH, I put his favorite candies and cash it :-).  Although, he was a stinker and pulled out all of the Almond Joys in one day.  DS will still be too little this year, so I am interested in what others will say for kids for future reference.
  • If you don't get around to making one, Target, Hobby Lobby, Michael's have some.  Actually Target has some for kids with candy already in them 2 for $5 this week. They are small, but still look fun.
