humidifiers/vaporizers for nursery

Anyone getting a humidifier/vaporizer for the nursery?  DH and I kind of assumed we should because we live in a very dry climate and its going to be winter.  But when we were shopping we got overwhelmed.  Should we get a heated one that sends steam into the room or just a cold humidifier?  I can't seem to find a lot of info in my baby books which tells me that maybe they aren't as necessary as I assumed.

Any thoughts?

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • I'm getting a cool mist humidifier. They produce less bacteria. I live in the middle of the desert so it's almost a necessity.

  • We bought one but I have to admit that I got it mostly because it is winne the pooh and goes with the nursery theme rather hot vs cold....
  • I just recently bought a cool mist humidifier for our own room to hopefully help with the nosebleeds I've been having. I read a lot online trying to understand the differences between cool & warm. From my understanding, cool mist are safer for young kids so there is not a chance of burning them if they play with it. Also, it requires less electricity and maintenance.

  • I registered for this humidifier because it's cool mist and it's cute. lol I think Baby Bargains recommended cool-mist because of a lower risk of mold.
  • We have a cool mist because it stops the chance of burns when left in my daughter's room. I only use it if she has a cold and needs it.
  • I had registered for a regular humidifier but now I am changing it to a cool mist (which I'd never heard of until this post) because our house is so dry.  We never open the windows because there is just way too much dust produced by our facility and it already seems to find its way in.  Therefore we tend to run the ac or heater year-round practically since we can't open the windows to help warm/cool the house.  It takes so much moisture out of the air.
  • Cold because they have less bacteria. The difference between warm and cold is warm is for the head and cold is for the lungs we found this out for my grandpa when he was having issues after his heart attack.

  • We have one because our house is pretty dry in the winter and it helps with colds/flu which run rampant in Illinois winters. Love the Crane kids' line.

We have the elephant one for LO's room and the standard teardrop shaped one for ours.

  • Possible stupid question but do you use them all through the winter or just when LO isn't feeling good?

and I also got a cool mist b/c it's what the pediatrician said was best

I use mine everyday fall-winter just because my nose and mouth get really dry at night and I hate static shocks. You can do whatever works though. Ask your pedi what he/she recommends.

  • I have a cool mist humidifier in DD's room and will be putting one in DS's room as well.  It truly is a God given when your little one gets a cold because you cannot give them anything for it other than Tylenol.  I also have a Vicks Vaporizer that I bought for myself before DD was born.  I used to use that every once in a while when she was a baby, but I had to stop using it when she started walking.  It was too much of a risk.

These are so cute!  It seems everyone is going with the cool mist which is the way I was leaning.  Something about having a heater in the nursery didn't seem safe.  Thanks for the input!

This is the one we'll be going with as well, but we are going with the panda. We loved the design, and it has great ratings on Amazon. My husband and I use ours from Fall until the early Spring and it makes a huge difference -- I forgot to turn it on the other night and I woke up mid-morning with a horrible pain in my throat.

  • You know, I never even thought about needing a humidifier. Our climate is always like 100% humidity, but our house does get fairly dry when we run the heater in the winter.

  • weird, at one of my pregnancy classes we were told or recommended to use a vaporizer, most ladies here are saying humidifier but i cant recall why the vaporizer was recommended versus the humidifier, man this pregnancy brain of mine.
