Hair Loss Postpartum

I suppose I could post this on another board, but I feel most comfortable with you ladies, so here goes:

Have any of you experienced excessive hair loss postpartum? LO is four months old and it's starting to happen to me. I'm wondering what treatments are available and how long it will last. Anyone?

Thanks!

Re: Hair Loss Postpartum

  • I sweep up mounds of hair a day!! It's crazy. I didn't realize you could lose so much hair. I constantly have to use a lint roller brush to get it off of me and it seems like DS always has a strand of hair or two between his fingers from me.

  • 100% normal and to be expected. There's not a lot you can do- all the hair that you didn't shed over your pregnancy due to hormones is going to fall out. I think it was about 3 months before I wasn't keeping the Draino company in business and another 3 before my hair was "normal" again.

There's nothing you can do really, but a wide toothed comb run through it after a shower is going to get rid of a lot of the bulk and you may find you need to brush it a few times a day. Curly hair or wearing it in the mom ponytail is going to trap in a portion of the falling hair, so you'll find a lot more when you come out of the shower.

  • It's totally normal.  Everyone talks about how much your hair and nails will grow while you're pregnant.  However, people don't tell you about the hair loss you may experience after you've given birth.

I'm not familiar with any treatments...just time.  My hair stopped falling out and started to grow back when my son was around eight months old.  However, everyone is different and hopefully your hair loss will stop sooner than mine did.

  • It's truly ridiculous the amount I have and am still losing.  I think it will last a few more months too.

There are no treatments; its the hormones doing it.  I think by 6-7 mos. post partum it should be done.  If not, then you might consider having a thyroid test to check your thyroid levels.

    Good luck.
