Is this a bad idea? re: books

I've always been of the opinion your kids can never have too many books. I even impose this opinion on friends by always giving books as gifts. However, we really, really, REALLY need to thin out the *stuff* in Truitt's room. He has too many unused toys and, well, too many books. We have A LOT of books in really regular rotation but there are a lot the boys just look at because they're there and wouldn't miss if they were gone, plus some that they've never cracked the binding for one reason or another.

Many of these are board books. At what point are board books of no educational value anymore?

And, will I regret it if I do a book purge and get rid of say 30ish of over 150 books?

I'd pack them up for a month and see if they miss them.  If they don't miss them by then, you won't be sorry.

Are they books you can move to Mathis' room?  He has a lot of opportunity to still use them so in that regard you might regret it.  If the books that remain are over his head or something he'd destroy you might find yourself wanting those board books back.

I thin Maddie's out every 6 months or so and she hasn't noticed.

    ETA:

Toys and books that are within a year of being age-appropriate for Maddie or she just doesn't use much get rotated to siblings in my family, or sent off to grandma's house.  (Books especially go to grandma's because my SIL doesn't read to her kids as much as I do).  Is that an option for you?  I don't know how often you guys visit family who'd be willing to keep a stash of the kids' stuff at their house for your visits. (Also cuts down on the amount of crap you have to pack).

  • I think you should donate them.  If you're not seriously considering another kid, the books they've outgrown would be nice as gifts for kids who can't/don't have many books.

I agree that you can never have enough books, but there is a limit to the amount of space you have.  You have to be practical as well.

  • MB: as far as moving books to Mathis's room, we have already done that although books flow freely between both kids. I don't really want them to each have their own books. We have more of a family library.

I did a rough estimate tonight as I rolled this idea out to DH. Based on an average of 20 per shelf in Tru's room, plus the books in Mathis's room and the ones that have spilled out all over the house, we have 300+ books. I think some need to go.

  • I think certain board books are nice to have, because the simplicity can be nice for an early reader.... only if the story is good, though.  Also, there are certain classics we only own in board book form, so I don't want to get rid of them.  I am starting to try and mostly borrow books from the library and buy classics and favorites DS1 keeps requesting - or ones that are really catchy with rhyming and would be good for early reading.

  • I just recently did this.  I am giving away the ones that they haven't touched in months and the ones that they are WAY past, like My First Animal Book and the like.  We just don't have much room at all here, so I really had to pare it down--not to mention that with Christmas and Hanukkah coming up, we'll be getting them even more, so we've got to make room.  :)

Oh if Mathis is done with them too then I'd donate like pp said, or send them to a family member's house for visits there (if applicable).  It's funny how excited Maddie is when she sees an old toy of hers that she wouldn't give a second glance at home.  And it makes traveling so easy.  Once they are too old for them for those visits, they can be donated to charity.

I like the other poster's idea about keeping some classics around though.  Like Dr. Seuss and Sandra Boynton favorites.  The point-and-identify-books have likely served their purpose though!  300+ books is probably overwhelming for them.

  • I am a book hoarder, but if there are a few that don't have any sentimental value, I say donate them or trade them at a book exchange.
