Nursing Bras

Please tell me everything I need to know.

I will not be able to get away with wearing just a nursing tank....

Where do I go?  I'll have to get a large size, so I don't think I'll be able to just walk into Target and get them.

How do I know what size to get for when my milk comes in?

Any recommendations?  Tips?

TIA!

Re: Nursing Bras

  • Hmmmm...I got all of my nursing bras at Target and LOVED them.  I saw some pretty big ones there so you may want to check. Lol!  I got the size I was in my third trimester and they fit me perfect post-pregnancy.

I have heard good things about ordering online with Medela or Bravado.

ETA: Nursing bras and comfy shirts worked well for me!  Oh, and I loved stuff that had a few buttons on the top of the shirt.  I lived in nightgowns that unbuttoned in the front.

  • I have a couple from Motherhood and most from Target. I love the target cotton underwire ones. Any that have lining have just turned to crap in 1 wash. I have seen larger sizes at Target. I have heard good things about Bravado but I just done want to shell out 40.00+ for a bra. I would get some cheap ones for the first weeks. You will get HUGE and then go down around week 3.
  • I agree with Lib, fogot to mention the underwire thing.  I was always told that a wire could cause clogged ducts and mastitis.

I was a 34 G BEFORE getting pregnant, so I'm thinking I'll have to go somewhere other than the "mainstream".  ugh.

  • The hospital where I had Caroline had a nursing boutique that had Medela and Bravado bras.  The great thing was that I got to try them on to see which was the most comfortable.  Maybe your hospital has something similar.  There were also several nursing/mother type of boutiques in the area that catered to BFing.  (I really haven't checked around in my new locale.)  Maybe your area has something like this.

  • I too got my bras fron Target and Motherhood so I'm not sure if that is much help.

As far as size...my boobs did not get much bigger during prenancy.  I got one bra up one cup size and when my milk came in I was busting out of it.  I ended up having to go up two cup sizes, was busting out of that for a bit too until a couple weeks after my milk came in - now the two cup sizes bigger fits great.

I guess my point is its super annoying because you cant plan too far ahead but I dont think you can say for sure what size you will need.  You might be best waiting till the baby arrives to get your bras or buy a few different sizes just be sure you can return them

  • Get sleep nursing bras for the first little bit while your milk is coming in and getting regulated. I still sleep in them sometimes. The ones from motherhood are super flimsy though so it may pay to get medela. I love love love my bravado bras. They also have an area on their website to kinda help you figure out what size to get (as in predict where you will end up). They usually put out a coupon code around every holiday for 25% off so I bet there will be one around thanksgiving. I liked motherhouse nursing tops as well as button down stuff. If you are nursing in public, or your inlaws are at your house, even if you use a cover you expose your sides and back unless you have a nursing top or cami. I prefer lined bras because after I nurse or pump I am nipping like crazy and I think it helps them be less visible. I also totally reccomend non underwire. Breakoutbras.com also has a lot of selection and sizes but I have had trouble getting a good fit in the brands I tried other than bravado. Lots of people rave about the bravado bliss. Sorry this is all over the place!
  • Motherhood Maternity has large sizes. What I did was just brought one ahead of time a size up, and then bought 5-6 more when Alexa was about 3 weeks old. I also bought a Bravada at the hospital's nursing boutique but the LC that measured me was convinced that I wasn't going to get smaller (hello I just had a baby the day before!) so she talked me into one that was way too big around after I lost the baby weight. It was a bummer since it was so comfy.

  • I love my Bravado bras.  I am normally a size A.  I was a D when my milk came in and now I'm a C if that helps you figure out sizing a little.  The Bravado website has a section that helps you figure that out.  I have a body silk seamless and the original and they are both super comfy and supportive.  I also really love their nursing tanks because they have a bra build into them not the flimsy shelf that most nursing bras have.  I pretty much live in them now.  I also really like the nursing tops from motherhood and they just had a huge sale on them last week...  you might check to see if its still going on.
