Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do you get your 5 month old to sleep?

DD is becoming increasingly difficult to put to sleep.  I used to be able to rock her in my arms for a bit, she'd fall asleep,  place her in her crib (she'd usually wake up for a second) but then conk out.   Lately, she won't fall asleep unless I'm rocking her IN the rocking chair.  She screams and fights sleep for a good 15 minutes.  When she finally falls asleep and I try to put her in the crib she wakes up and starts screaming again.  It just took me 45 minutes to get her to fall asleep for what will most likely be a 30 minute nap.

Does your 5 month old fall asleep on their own?  If so, how'd you do it?  I feel really lost with this one.

  • DS is not capable of falling asleep on his own. I still have to rock or nurse him to sleep. I wish he would go down "drowsy but awake"...but it's definitely not happening yet. He usually has to be pretty asleep to put him in his crib or he wakes up. I'm jealous of all the LOs that can fall asleep on their own.

  • 1. Rock to sleep at night in chair for 15 minutes.  He sleeps from about 8:45 pm-5:00 am.  Then it is in bed with us.

    2. He still sleeps on me for naps.  Trying to transition him to crib.

  • Sorry to say, but DD falls asleep on her own (we are very lucky with that one). We can put her in her crib awake...usually needs the soother put back in once or twice if she's really alert, but then she conks out. Sorry that you're having problems - hope they iron themselves out soon!

  • I rock him, sing the same 2 songs and then put him in the crib.  Usually he's asleep but sometimes just drowsy- if he's drowsy I gently stroke his face and do a little shh'ing and within about 30 seconds I walk out and if he's not already asleep he will soon go down.  If only he slept as well as he goes down!!!

  • We nurse to sleep; however, I recommend reading "The No Cry Sleep Solution".  It's helped us a lot with getting him down for naps, getting enough sleep, and waking less at night.

  • DS usually passes out since he's not a great napper during the day (he gets overdone and passes out). If he's fighting sleep we walk with him and give him a nice firm tap tap tap to his tush, it really works!

  • My LO is going through a fighting sleep phase right now.  I'm sure it'll pass though.  They change so often, you know?  I remember this happening with my dd too.  She became a much better sleeper around 9 months and then around 15 months.
