Need Advice NBR

DH just got a job in Hawaii and we are moving out there this month. Taking a pet to Hawaii is HELL. You have to put them through a 120 day animal quarantine and you can either do it there and pay a lot of money to keep them at their special boarding center, or we can keep our dog here with family and have them send her out 120 days after her blood tests are processed. So I have been staying at my parents while DH is in New York for training and my parents didn't want my dog here so she has been with DH's family. She has Valley Fever and needs medication twice a day, if she doesn't get her meds she gets very sick. Well I went over there the other day, and she has obviously not been getting her medication she has lost a lot of weight and her bad cough has come back. I said something to my MIL and she swears up and down the dog is getting her pills, so I counted her pills last Monday and counted them again today she has only gotten 5 pills.... she should have gotten 14.

Because my dog has Valley Fever and needs medication she would have to be in a special quarantine that DH and I just can't afford and I refuse to get rid of her! She is a huge part of our family. So I need my IL's to take care of her until her blood work goes through and we can send for her. What would you do about the pills if you were in my situation? It's not that hard to give her a pill twice a day, you put it in her dog treat and she eats it. I can't be mean to MIL about it because obviously I need to stay on her good side, she is doing me a huge favor. For now my parents are in Orlando for 11 days so I snuck her into my house to make sure she is being well cared for, but what do I do when I have to leave for Hawaii and send her back to MIL's?

  • I would explain to your MIL what an important member of the family your dog is. Ask her if this is something she is willing to take responsibility for or if you should be making other arrangements. She may not be up to the task. If the dog really is that important to you, you may just have to find a way to pay for her to get the treatment she needs and board her.

  • I would get your DH to talk to her.  That's a tricky situation.  Even though she's doing you a favor, she obviously needs to actually do it.  If you talk to her, just tell her that your dog is a very important part of your family and you really want to make sure she gets better.  You could even use your LO saying that your LO loves the dog so much already and you want to make sure the dog is around as long as possible.

Do you have a friend who can watch the dog?  Would it be cheaper than the quarantine for a dog sitter?  It might be better than you MILs, but cheaper than the quarantine.  You could even hire a dog walker that could give her the pills.  And just tell your MIL that you don't want the dog to be a huge burden on her so you hired a dog walker.

I don't know if any of this helps, but I hope your situation gets better.  Sorry your dog is sick.  GL!

  • I'd take my dog to her dog "day care" which also boards animals & talk to them about it. they really care about the pets well being & would probably do abasement plan since it would be costly, but IMO, worth it. my mil would never take my dog so I don't know how that is but it sounds bad.

  • Can you pre-load the treats with the pills yourself so all she has to worry about is giving them to the dog?  If that won't work than you just might have to go there twice a day and do it yourself at least till you leave.

This!  See if your DH can get through to her and if not maybe try a friend?  GL
