smelling an ear infection?

We visited family yesterday. My cousin, mom of a 2 year old, held DD and said she smelled an ear infection. I've never heard of smelling them but her son is constantly sick with one. Anyone heard of this? Is she crazy? Cause that is what I'm thinking.

Re: smelling an ear infection?

  • DS had bad breathe for the first time this past weekend and on Tuesday he was diagnosed with a pretty severe double ear infection. A few days on antibiotics and I noticed he smelled "normal" again.

I wouldn't say I smelled an ear infection, per se, but something was going on. And this is only DS's second ear infection, so I'm not sure if it always happens.??

So... either she's on to something or I just proved I'm as crazy as she is! :)?

  • She's not crazy.  I'm an audiologist and let me tell you, ear infections can smell very bad.  I actually gagged once when I went to look in a patient's ear!  Infections anywhere in the body stink.  This is only the case though if the ear drum has ruptured and the infection has spilled into the ear canal.  If the ear drum is still intact, you could still have a pretty bad infection yet not have a really bad smell.

  • I actually "smelled" an ear infection on my DS when he was about 6 months old. I had just given him a bath, and was nursing him to sleep. I smelled a weird vinegar-y type smell coming from his ear and called the doctor about it. I took him in the next day and he had the very beginnings of an ear infection (fluid in the ear). The pedi was amazed I caught it so early! She said often moms know their babies so well they can immediately pick up on something different/weird.
  • Wow. I never really thought about it. But I guess infections do smell. I hadn't noticed a difference in DD's smell and she is acting fine. So I think my cousin may have been wrong this time but I am tempted to take DD to the pedi to check now.
