You named your child all 4 syllables of "Alexander" but deem a 5 letter name like Diana "pretentious?" Must be a British thing.
Haha, hell yes Alexander is pretentious...that was actually a well discussed word when we picked both of our boys' names (Edward and Alexander). My husband is Christopher (Chris). Christopher is pretentious and we wanted names that matched. That all being said, Chris, Alex, and Eddie are all very blue-collar, down to earth names. For the boys, we go back and forth 50-50 with nn's and full names.
I don't see having a pretentious name as a bad thing. If either of our boys had been a girl, they would have been Carrington/Kerrington(?).
I just know that a lot of the Diana's here go by "Di" and they are all pretty upper class.
Like I said, to me pretentious is not bad...my name is on the list I contributed too.
My cousins named their daughter Iphigenia which is the most pretentious name I've ever heard.
Veronica is lovely.
Also, I imagine 'Diana' has much different connotations in the UK, which would make it seem far more pretentious,
What???? Where on earth did she dig that name up? Iphigenia should have been left with the passing of the Victorian era, right alongside hair jewelry and pinafores.
Veronica... no. In my opinion, any yuppie-ish "surname-turned-first-name" for a girl sounds unbelievably pretentious to me, like...
Campbell
Harper
Emerson
Waverley
McKenzie
Kendall
Addison
Bronwyn
Cooper
Bailey
Also, girl names ending in "-sley" sound annoyingly pretentious to me... not in a real "old money" way though, more in a way where the otherwise middle-America parents are trying too hard to make their kid sound like some heir to fortune or future country club president... like...
Presley
Tinsley
Kinsley
Ainsley
I think that covers it. Oh, and Sloane.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

My cousins named their daughter Iphigenia which is the most pretentious name I've ever heard.
What???? Where on earth did she dig that name up?
Greek mythology, probably...Iphigenia was the oldest daughter of Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks during the Trojan war. She's a lot less-well-known than her sister Electra, though, since she disappeared early on in the story and never got a complex named after her

Exactly. They said it was 'to reflect their love of the Classics'. I asked if they'd reflected on the fact that Iphigenia was given as a sacrifice to the gods to punish her father for his arrogance, which in this case would make it the PERFECT name! I also asked if they realized that in Junior High she's going to get called 'Itsavagina'. They were not amused.
Re: What girl names do you think of that are 'pretentious'?
I don't think of Veronica as pretensious.
I think more along the lines of way-too-long, exhorbidant names, like:
Eugenia
Wilhemina
Priscilla
Genevieve (though I love it)
Aloysius (probably because of Doubt)
ETA: Totally forgot my least favorite pretensious name, Alexandria. Also, Anastasia.
No, I don't think Veronica is pretentious.
I think of names like Courtland, Lindley, Emerson..
Carrington
Carolyn
Caroline
Diana (especially w/ nn Di)
Victoria
Channing
Whitley
Ivanka
Octavia
Hillary
Antoinette
Sabrina
Vivian/Vivienne
Alexandra
Eleanor
Jacqueline
No, not at all
Carrington, Brook, Emerson
I think last names as first names are pretentious. Collins is one example.
I agree, and -ton names (Kensington, Ashton, etc.). I don't think Veronica is pretentious at all, or most of the examples pp's mentioned.
this was on my short list but i couldn't get dh on board. i don't think it's pretentious, though. is pretty.
pretentious is names with unnecessary syllables, like elizabetha or weird, obscure stuff like araminta.

I'm not British, by the way...just live here.
i really like the name veronica, and i don't think it's pretentious.
IMO, schuylar (skylar), piper, sloane (which i love, love, love), blaire, kendall, parker, and other names like them, sound very pretentious.

no, I don't think Veronica is pretentious. I think these names are pretentious- they seem to be trying too hard:
Cordelia
Ophelia
Tallulah
Veronica is not pretentious, but I'd take pretentious over "made up" or "common" anyday.
PP, I think Cordelia and Ophelia are very pretty, but Ophelia has a terrible association with mental illness.
The only thing I find pretentious about this thread is that some posters bold names and random words.
But seriously, I can't think of a name I view as inherently pretentious. I think it takes the individuals' actions to make that determination.
