Perineal massage?

I did it for the first time last night and wow, it was weird, but I can definitely see how doing it for the next 8 weeks will help make things stretchier down there.

Anyone planning on doing this?

Re: Perineal massage?

  • no... i feel violated enough all the time with the kicks in the cervix and the hiccups i can feel in my butt... haha.

i totally had intentions of doing this. but really i can barely reach down there to wipe, so rubbing EVOO on my taint? not fun times

  • I plan on starting around 32 weeks.  What are you using for lube?
  • I have some cocoa butter so I tried that last night but it really wasn't what I was hoping for, so I think I'm going to pick up some Vitamin E oil today.

My sister, who had two vaginal deliveries (one episiotomy and one tear) told me that this is the one thing that she wishes she had tried.? It's not all that comfortable, but I figured why not give it a shot, right?

  • I plan on doing this, but haven't started. I even told DH he needs to help becuase its too difficult for me to do alone. He was actually into helping! I think because he believes it will lead to sexy time. I told him - it may be appealing right now but when we have to do it in the hospital it won't be and that he has to be down for doing both. He agreed. Man I love him.

As funny as it is, I do plan to have DH do this.  He also thinks it will somehow lead to sexy time...um no.
  • I'm not. I thought about it, but at our Bradley class our teacher said that recent studies show the same rate of episiotomy between those who do it and those who do not.

LOL...I don't know what makes men think of sexy time when they think of it.? We watched Baby Mama right after I did it yesterday, and this part cracked me up!

  • The nurse did it in the hospital.  I didn't tear there, so maybe it helped?

The nurse that did our childbirth class said not to do it beforehand, unless you knew how to do it properly.  Apparently, it can do more harm than good, if it's not done right.

  • I did it occasionally with DH's help with DS#2 but still had a tear because I had to push DS#2 STAT because the cord was wrapped around his neck a few times....  I haven't decided if I'll do it again this time or not.

  • I've also been told that there is nothing that shows it actually does anything by doing it before hand and I really have no desire to massage myself down there....I know people that did it and still tore and people that didn't do it and didn't :) tear. I think a lot of it depends on your Dr and how good they are at letting you take your time and letting things progress naturally....my midwife also said they NEVER do an episiotomy unless their is an emergency that they have to get the baby out asap

This is why I'm going with a midwife b/c everyone I know who used one didn't tear and they swear it's b/c the midwife let things progress naturally and didn't have them pushing when they shouldn't be and just let their body stretch.

Now I may be wrong, but from what I've read it won't help you if you've already had at least one baby.  The tiny bit of stretch you achieve by massaging your body has already gone through by going through labor previously.
