3rd Trimester

Don't know how to buy a nursing bra...

So I assume I need one of these before LO arrives, yes? But my boobs will be ginormous and I won't know how big they'll get until after birth.

So how does this work?

Re: Don't know how to buy a nursing bra...

  • Buy a cheapie target nursing tank or bra for now then after your milk comes in go get fitted at a maternity store. My boobs didn't grow after my milk came in but I know for some women they will go up a cup size or two.

  • I asked a similar question.....I was told to go get measured at Motherhood maternity (or another maternity store) and then by a size up from that.

I am going to go get measured this week and get a bra. I would like to have at least one bra for the hospital. Good luck. :-))

  • I bought a couple of bras that were like a sports bra before having DD.  I bought them 2 different sizes (one & two sizes up).  I used both thru the last year.

I would suggest buying at least one for the hospital.  I thought it was much more comfortable.

This is what I'm thinking of doing...I at least want 1 or 2 for at the hospital.

  • I had a cheap on from target for the hospital with DS. Wore nursing tank with DD and prefer that so I will bring that with me to the birth center again.

If you want to buy a nice one I heard if you buy a cup size that fits your breast with your hand in there that is how big you will be after milk comes in. Hope that makes sense.

  • Don't buy anything yet. Just buy a few nursing tanks (I like the ones from Target) as you probably won't really be leaving the house for a few weeks anyway. Wait until your milk comes in and your supply regulates then go and get some bras. My boobs really never changed after my milk coming in, but you never know.
  • I've been told to stick with the same band lengths and just go up a cup size... I'd start with just buy one and then once you know if it will fit get another one or two

  • I talked with a sales lady at Motherhood a few weeks ago.  She recommended going with a wireless bra for the first couple weeks, as the wires can lead to mastitis (?).  I have bought a couple tanks and wireless nursing bras from Target that I will use to begin with.  I will probably go get measured a week or so after the baby is born.  The Motherhood lady said they usually recommend 2 cups sizes up from what I am wearing now in third tri.  PP I was a 34 D, now a 36 DD, so I'm a little frightened by what size I will end up being once my milk comes in!

  • I went with one from the GAP and went one size up both cup and circum.  I just got them and they seem to fit good...big in the cup but my milk hasn't come in yet.

  • My experience:

I started shopping cause I really needed a new bra anyway since my boobs have grown alot. I started with cheaper stores and department stores and tried on about 4 different brands.  I HATED,  HATED them!  I have pretty good size boobs and the bras were all so uncomfortable or had so little support I thought I was doomed.  I was almost in tears after my 3rd shopping trip thinking no good nursing bras existed.  Don't worry, this is not the case!!  I finally went to a good maternity store and they had TONS of choices.  I ended up only buying 2 ( Bravado and another brand), and they fit nicely but have some give because I am sure I will grow when I am nursing and they may be a little snug, but they are good bras, so i am sure I can handle it and am waiting to buy anymore.

    GL!
