Zumba and pregnant?

With my first pregnancy I did Pilates 3x a week the entire time (until day before I had DS).  I started Zumba in September and didn't know if I could continue or not.  I will double check with OB when I go for my first appointment, but wanted to know if anyone was successful with it.

Re: Zumba and pregnant?

  • If your doctor says your fine to work-out... then I would say definitely yes!  Any kind of aerobic activity is so beneficial for you and baby... I jog everyday plus incorporate different kinds of strength... my mom did aerobics through all of her pregnancies... I think the basic rules are just don't do any exercises that have you lying on your back after 14 weeks.. and don't lift anything over 50 pounds....

  • I did a kickboxing weight class up to 24 weeks no problems just ask your doc to be safe
  • I'll be 37 weeks this thursday and doing Zumba, kickboxing, weight training, and yoga.  I think as long as you and baby are healthy its fine.  My midwives have told me it can only help with having a good pregnancy and labor.  Not to mention getting back in shape afterwards.   I think Zumba is great cause you are moving around and burning those cals.
  • My Dr said no to Zumba. She said I need to keep my heartrate under 140 and the jumping, twisting, etc isn't good.  So I switched to aqua zumba and it's just as much fun.
  • keeping your heart rate under 140 is an old theory... most doctors don't follow that anymore because it's been proven safe for "most" women to work out as they normally do for the most part... just don't over do it and keep hydrated... you can't base your level of exertion on your heart rate when your pregnant bc it is naturally elevated already... it's simple... if you feel tired slow down or stop....
  • It depends on your medical history and your doctor's recomendations.  That being said, I did Zumba, walking, and light weight lifting until the morning I gave birth.  It was the only time I felt normal.  I did get some stares and rude comments at the gym, but my doctor was completely supportive.
  • It depends a lot on what your body is used to.  If it was activity you did before pregnant, your body is more prepared for it.

I used to teach Zumba but decided to stick to just teaching water aerobics during my pregnancy.  I still go to Zumba classes though.  If you would like to Zumba, here are my tips (but always go with what your doctor says first)

    -Keep hydrated

-take it down if you are feeling dizzy or off balance

-Salsa and Mambo are very safe, but watch the jumping and bouncing in Cumbia, Samba, and Merengue. Hip Hop and Reggaeton depends a lot on the individual zumba instructor.

-stretch well and try to avoid overly exaggerated movement or hyper-extension.

-most of all, if it hurts - don't do it

    HAVE FUN!

  • I think it is safer to wait to do zumba or anything that makes you out of breath tell you are done with the first tri. My doctor says it depends on your activity levels before your pregnancy. I am normally a gym rat, but I am taken it easy for the first 3 months and sticking to yoga and walking. when I am in my 2ed tri I will be back in my cycling class sweating away =)
  • My OBGYN said I can continue doing the exercises that I did before getting pregnant - which for me, includes Zumba. I'm able to keep up okay now for the most part. Sometimes I feel a little more winded than I used to though and just bring the intensity down a bit.

  • There is a woman at my gym that teaches Zumba, and shes pregnant.
  • i did my zumba dvd the morning i went into labor. If you are used to exercise, it's fine.  Modify where you see fit.
  •  I was wondering this same thing the moment I got my bfp last week.  So I have been researching and the only time I see that it's not safe is if your dr recommends you not to do it.   It is the only thing that gives me energy any more.  So I'm really hoping that I can continue to do it.

  • I am a Zumba instructor and currently teaching 2x/week.  I'll be 17 weeks pregnant on Thursday, and the only modification I've really noticed is that I do get winded a little easier than before being pregnant, so I just step it down a little when needed. My midwife is totally fine with it as long as I continue to feel good. She said the general rule these days is that you can continue any exercise you were doing pre-pregnancy unless there is something about your pregnancy that is high risk, and then you need to talk to your Dr/MW about it specifically.

I will teach through my 37th week, unless I deliver early or have as yet unforseen complications that have me out early.  Go for it if you feel good!

  • I got the same rule as another poster: no Zumba because my heart rate needs to stay bwtn 140-150 max. When I do zumba it easily gets to 170, even though I tried taking it down a notch.

I'm super bumbed and missed terribly, especially since I just got my certification in June and had to stop teaching as soon as I started.

Thinking about asking again, but my hubby says it's just four more months then I can go back. :p
