Sleeping at night and changing diapers

With my first baby everytime she woke up to eat, we changed her diaper.  In the beginning that was every hour and a half to two hours.  My first dd was a terrible sleeper (and still is).  Some of my friends with babies have said they don't change the diaper at every feeding.  What do you do?  I know that in the very beginning it's necessary because of the meconium, but once that's passed would you still change the diaper at every feeding in the middle of the night?

Thanks!

  • If it's just wet, sometimes I will let it go. If it's dirty I will def. change it

  • I have to. I wouldn't want to wallow in a pissy diaper..plus DD's diaper is usually soaked.

  • We do change her when she wakes up.  She generally sleeps 3-4 hour stretches and is pretty wet when she wakes up.  The only exception is if we feed her around 4-5am and she starts fussing around 6am; I'll just take her into bed with us and let her sleep on my chest.  She usually only lasts another hour or two before she needs to be fed again, so we'll skip changing her until she's definitely up.
  • with my first, I changed her everytime she got up, which was every hour or two. That was, until I read the No Cry Sleep Solution that said NOT to do that because it's not necessary and gets them used to shorter sleep cycles, and that it's harder for them to go back to sleep when their diaper is changed during the night. I stopped changing her every time and just changed her once a night (maybe 2-3 am?) and she started sleeping much longer stretches.

This time around, I have only changed her once a night since the beginning and she is a great sleeper.

Think about it - if your baby STTN, you wouldn't wake them to change them, would you???

  • I was going to ask this too!  After DS eats he falls into the best sleep.  When I change his diaper he cries so hard leaving me to get him to sleep again.  I selfishly want to put him down during the night straight from his feeding to get more sleep.  I kind of go back and forth with it.  But he has been sleeping for longer stretches between feedings at night so we might not have to worry about this much longer:)  I hate how red and unhappy he gets for his nighttime changes!
  • If she wakes up I do, but she usually falls asleep after nursing so I don't wake her up. She rarely has poopy diapers at night. The Pampers holds up pretty well over night and her skin is dry when I change her in the morning. She doesn't get rashes.

Me too. Our routine is change, nurse on one side, burp, swaddle, switch sides and nurse to sleep. That was recommended to me by a nurse in the hospital.

  • She usually poops while nursing or right after, but I find if I swaddle her up and rock her a bit she goes right back to sleep. I change her when she's wet/poopy. I wouldn't want to sit around in that and I don't want my baby to, either. (No Cry be damned -- then again, she's a good sleeper...)
  • I've noticed DS doesn't ever poop at night, and the middle of the night diapers were never too wet when I would change him, so I cut them out and he's definitely been sleeping better since. Keeping him in that deep sleep state really helps him to not pee I guess.

  • I do a diaper change in between breasts. She usually needs it, plus the diaper change has the added benefit of waking her up so she eats well on the other side. Sometimes she gets two diaper changes, one before she starts nursing and one when we switch sides. She is a prodigious pooper.
  • I usually change his diaper after his long stretch of sleep (5 or 6 hours). After that long stretch, he sleeps 2 to 3 hours. Unless he has pooped, which he rarely does at night, I skip the diaper change at the next feeding. With DS1, I changed his diaper at almost every feeding, but DS1 pooped a lot more than DS2 and he almost always had a poopy diaper.
  • We change DS if he has a middle of the night feeding.  We change him mid-feed and it doesn't wake him up too much.  If we skip changing him, his diaper leaks.
