Flu shot - before or after?

Reposting from 3rd trimester in hopes of getting more input:

Okay, so I know a lot of you ladies have differing opinions about the flu shot. I'm delivering by c/s next Friday, and I'm terrified going in to flu season with LO without having a flu shot. But, I'm also terrified by all the possible side effects, etc. that could come from getting the flu shot while pregnant. Does anyone know if it makes a difference (as far as LO) if you get the flu shot while pregnant vs. while nursing?

I don't want to come down with the flu, especially while b/f, and going into the holiday season, I don't trust other people to keep their germs to themselves and stay away from others when they're sick. I really want to vaccinate myself, but just not sure what to do about baby...

  • You should probably ask your pediatrician.

  • I'm not sure of what the differences would be.  That being said, I tend to feel like crap for 24 hours after a flu vaccine.  I felt worse this year.  I don't know if that has to do with being pregnant or not.   I've had the mist in previous years.  It's much better than getting the flu, but I definitely don't feel great after getting the shot.  Personally, I'd get the shot while pregnant, so I don't have to feel sick with a newborn, who will be up a lot.

  • I was really hesitant like you, for all of the same reasons to get it while pregnant but wasn't sure I should wait (who wants to be sick with a newborn and miss the chance of passing on those immunities while pregnant to the baby?!) But I didn't have a chance to get it before going into labor so they ended up giving it to me while in labor at the hospital so she could get the immunities through BF and I didn't have to go out and get it after the baby was born.

I had no side effects what so ever except a sore arm, but because I had delivered at the same time, I didn't notice because everything else was sore as well.
