Does Target make everyone hand in their ID's or just me?

Today I made my rounds to Target and BRU to bulk up my registries a bit -- DH and MIL said they were lacking, and I guess it's better to have too many than too little options.

I was surprised though that when I went to Target the Guest Services rep requested my driver's license when I asked to add a few more items to my registry. I thought maybe she was verifying that I actually am who I said. I took the gun and went on my merry little way.

When I was done I went to go drop the gun off, and turned to head out. "WAIT!" She yelled. "You need your ID!" Everyone in line started laughing at me and making jokes, which I thought was a tiny bit rude. I didn't even realize the girl still had my ID, and now I'm wondering if they are just holding on to them so people return the scanners.

Has anyone else had to do this, or is my Target just nuts?

Re: Does Target make everyone hand in their ID's or just me?

  • I believe it's due to people not returning the scanners.  When I registered while pregnant with the boys I remember them requesting my ID.

  • Can't say it has happened to me, and I registered at Target and updated at two other Targets (different Targets in our area have vastly different selections of baby items).  But it makes you wonder, if they're doing it there, maybe they have had problems with younger kids/couples stealing the guns!

  • Weird, I was never asked for my ID at Target when I went to finish my registry. They just asked me to log in, print my registry and they gave me the gun scanner. Maybe some stores follow that policy and some don't.

  • It's just very odd because they've never asked me to do that before. I guess some of the workers enforce it and others don't? I couldn't believe I almost walked out without my license though!

  • It's especially weird because it's not like they don't have your name and address on file associated with the gun. So if they don't get it back, they know who to go after.

  • Why would anyone steal a scanning gun?

  • Doesn't seem weird to me. Crate and Barrel does the same thing. They just don't want you to walk out accidently with the scanner - hoping you'll remember to get your ID and hence, turn in the scanner.

    This!

Weird= I think the scanning guns are gross, and I clean them with sani-wipes before I will touch them!

I haven't had to fork over my ID for my registry...
