Trying to Get Pregnant

those who have been ttc for a while...

specifically, those who have moved onto testing...

this was month 12 and a bust as it's CD1 for me. I had my annual in august and my doctor said if we weren't pregnant by the holidays to give a call and we'd discuss testing and other options

Did most of you go to your regular obgyn for testing..I'm assuming its bloodwork and some other tests to check levels etc?

or were you immediately referred to an RE?

just trying to see what to expect! Thanks

Re: those who have been ttc for a while...

  • I am working with my OB for a few more cycles.  He said I could go to an RE at anytime, if I would like.

  • We have been trying for 7 months, so I can't answer your question. I did want to tell you that if you can't find any answers here, you may try to also post this on the Trouble TTC board, as most of those women have been trying for more than a year (unfortunately).

     Good luck!

  • We are starting out with my OBGYN. I think going to straight to an RE depends on a few facctors, such as your age, pre-exisitng conditions, irregular periods, etc. For initial testing, you should be fine to stay with your OBGYN, and they will refer you if necessary. Good luck!

  • I started with my OB/GYN and she did some initial bloodwork and and a saline sono.  Right away she found issues so she's doing surgery (today actually!) to remove the polyps and scar tissue.  At my post op appt, we'll be discussing next steps.  There's an RE in their practice so she was going to consult with her as well.  Hope this helps!

  • I don't know if it's just a Canadian thing, but most of us do not have OBs until we are pregnant. And we're only usually referred to a Gyno if there is a problem. Family doctors do everything and refer when necessary.

I went to my family doctor and she referred me to an RE right away. It was about a 6 week wait to get in, so in the meantime, my family doc sent me for CD 3 bloodwork, ultrasound, and had DH do his SA so that the RE could have all the results for our first consult. Now, my first month at the RE just consists of the "bigger" stuff like baseline ultrasounds, SHG, etc.

I don't know if there is a long wait time where you are, but I might ask for a referral right away and then have your OB do the initial testing while you're waiting. Gets things moving along faster. GL :)

  • Even given my and MH ages, we are starting with my OB. There is an RE clinic right across the street and they work closely together. So if need be, I know where I'll end up. But I felt very comfortable with my OB ordering all of the standard tests. Actually my OB was much more thorough than some of my IRL friends' OBs, so I'm happy with my decision.

  • I went to my family doc and she reffered me to an OB...it will take a few months to actually get an appointment so I thought i'd go request it sooner rather than later.

  • My OB did the initial bloodwork and based on the results, referred me to a RE.  My RE re-did all of the bloodwork my OB did originally.

  • I went to my OBGYN after cycle 8 (over 35), and he did my HSG, CD3 blood work, and sent DH to the urologist for blood work and SA. Once we got DH's results back, my OB referred us to an RE.

  • With my first after we had been trying for over a year and we were at the 14 month mark, we started doing sa, hsg, ultrasounds and this was all done by my regular ob, luckly right after we started testing we got pregnant so we never moved on the re, hoping this happens for you. GL

  • I went to my OBGYN at the 12 month mark, I was due for me yearly anyway, so I also talked to him about my concers, long cycles, etc. He actually didn't want to do any testing. He actually just wrote me a script for Clomid and sent me out the door. That sent me running for the hills. DH's husband has been to several RE's in our area, so I asked her who I should see, and I just made an appointment. Since my insurance covers 0 infertility I obviously didn't need a referral. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
  • First, I'm sorry you had to reach this point at all.

Second, I am currently with an OBGYN undergoing testing. I am starting with her, will probably get an HSG done with her, and then will be referred to an RE.

  • My OB tentatively diagnosed me w/PCOS then did bloodwork to confirm. She then put me on Metformin and said to come back if I didn't get pg in six months, but after learning more about doing fertility meds w/OBs here and finding out that I didn't need a referral for an RE with my insurance, I decided to go straight to the RE for further testing and meds, instead of back to the OB.
