Which thermometer?

Which thermometer did you get for LO?  I know the Vicks rectal thermometer is good but I want to have on that is not rectal also b/c I know I'll probably be a little scared to do the rectal thermometer.

Is there one that is good that you can use underarm?

Re: Which thermometer?

  • I got the vicks rectal and a temporal one

  • We got Summer Infant Dr. Mom 3 in 1 Family Thermometer.
  • I'd stick with the rectal for primary use. I've heard that the other thremometers can be off compared to rectal and if your baby's sick, it can make a real difference.

It totally does. Honestly, still the only thermometer I trust is the non-mercury manual read ones, I don't even really like digital reads. I got the temporal for a quick non-invasive check and if I get an elevated reading I will go in with the rectal.

  • At a class I recently took at our hospital they said that they do not recommend rectal themometors at all because the can cause damage.  They also said that they do not recommend the temporal ones either.  They told us our best bet was to get the plain digital themometor and to make sure that you tell the doctor where you took the temperature when you call.  Example...armpit because it can change the degree of the temperature.
  • We use the one you put in baby's ear and it takes the temperature in a few seconds. That worked well. We bought a temporal one last year and it already broke.

  • I've always just done it under the arm because it gives you a close enough idea on whether they have a temp or not.  I tried to use a temporal thermometer and couldn't even get it to work myself.  I can't even imagine trying to get it to work on a squirming infant.

  • We got the Vicks rectal and the Exergen temporal.

I've been told to use the rectal early on, and once he's a bit older, we'll start using the temporal.  Obviously haven't tested out the rectal, but the temporal matches what my BBT says.

I have never heard that. If you do it gently, you shouldn't have an issue. It's the most accurate reading.

  • we just did our hospital "baby care basics class" also, and they told us not to use the rectal thermometer either because they've seen damage from them.  We registered for an ear digital one, but if we dont get it may just use a basic one under the arm.
