I was just on the phone with my oldest brother who has 3 kids. He was asking me how the pregnancy was going, etc, the usual questions, and then he asks me "Are y'all going to have a placenta party?" And I said "Umm what?" and he went on to explain to me that his wife (from Puerto Rico) and her family threw a party shortly after the birth of their oldest DS and made them eat the placenta. EAT the placenta. I told him that's disgusting and crazy, but then I went and google'd it, and apparently people do this, and it's not at all uncommon, and not JUST in Puerto Rico.
Is anyone planning on doing this? I'm not asking in a condescending way, I'm just interested. I've never, ever heard of this before.
Re: You did WHAT with the placenta?!
wow, never heard of it!
I think I can safely say we will NOT be holding a placenta party of our own!
^I'm sorry lol, I did absolutely have to share.
I just don't think I could ever stomach eating my own organ. But I'd love some perspective on "why" some do this.
I have heard of people having placenta parties and eating the placenta...not my thing...I don't think ingesting organs of humans is a good thing..I have heard of people planting their placenta in their yard under a new tree for the baby, and I believe I saw on here the placenta bear. To each his own I guess. I will leave mine at the hospital.
One of my friends sisters had a baby last year in Thailand (I think) and they left the placenta attached to their son (which is a normal practice even here) but in the pan where the placenta was lying they put exotic flowers all over it. I never got to ask why, or the significance, but it was interesting to see. Tradition is tradition...
THIS!!
Oh my god, whatever you do, don't google "placenta teddy bear."
This is just the worst!

I think I just threw up in my mouth. Ew.
haha. You don't have to apologize
I am assuming it is for the nutrients/health...who knows!
Natural Birth Board FAQs
Cloth Diaper Review Sheet
Hahahaha! Exactly. I clicked on that link once when someone else posted it last time I was pg. I will not make the same mistake this time around. *shudders*
A while ago I saw someone post about this exact thing. They were asking something about taking the placenta home, or how to prepare it... I don't exactly remember. I believe the post was on the natural childbirth board... I was shocked when I read that, and no one responded to it, at least while I remembered to check up on it... but it doesn't seem to strange after all, however.... I will not be feasting on my placenta!!!!!
I kinda wish someone would post a comment that we are all crazy and that every one should the placenta, I would love to hear the other side of this argument!
BTW... OMG to the placenta bear... remember Texas Chainsaw Massacre... Leatherface ring a bell??
why is it that i knew what this was going to be about, and yet i still finally opened it?
my placenta wil be remaining at the hospital. props to anyone who does anything else with it.
Yeah I have no use for the placenta after it exits my body and ceases to provide nourishment for my baby.
YUCK!
When I was in nursing school on my OB rotation, I had a family ask for the placenta. I was shocked. I didn't know about that tradition. They were a super sweet family and told me all about the significance of ingesting it. Unfortunately for them, that patient had a severe infection and her placenta was not safe to eat.
I can easily say that I have no desire to see my placenta after birth.
I'd heard of the soup but had assumed the ritual was only for the mother to eat it, not also guests.
I did attend a first birthday party where the placenta was planted with a tree. It was wrapped in a white cloth but dripped quite a bit while being carried across the yard. Urgh.
BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence
i smiled when i opened this because i just knew what all the responses would be, lol. I think the more common thing, at least in the US, is placenta encapsulation:
https://placentabenefits.info/
There are supposed to be so many benefits to this, as PP mentioned, helping with PPD, helping the mother's body to heal faster, basically making post-partum a better experience. Another thing a lot of people do is cut a peice off the placenta and put it in a smoothie with berries. People swear you can't even taste it!

My personal opinion is, if it could help my body heal faster and serve as a wonderful, natural aid during the post-partum period, I'm all for it.
But my friends also call me hippy.....
