I was reading on the wholesome baby food site and they recommend freezing the homemady baby food and then thawing it out for use. How exactly would you go about thawing out an ice cube of frozen baby food? Microwave, let it thaw in the fridge? I'm just thinking that when Miller is hungry he's not willing to wait on something to thaw out. I would be nervous about putting it in the fridge and letting it thaw for a long time. I guess one would have to be really diligant in remember to put the frozen food in the fridge to thaw for the next day? What do you guys do?

You know its strange but we went home Labor Day week-end seeing both mine and DH's parents, telling them we're expecting a LO in February both moms asked me what I planned doing about feeding the new arrival. I told them I planned to breast feed until solid foods were introduced - then planned feeding from the table (as my mom had done). Both agreed this is the way to go but, don't season what you cook - which I don?t do even for us. So that's not a problem.
My mom and MIL said they fed us (meaning me and Fred) from what they fed everyone else only we had ours pur?ed so it was eatable for us. Everyone at the table could add their own spices or seasonings as needed. Both moms said they didn't prepare ours differently or freeze them. We just ate what they ate at each meal. Mom said if she had leftover's for me it was saved for later that day or the next.
Only thing either said is that they did buy cereals in - rice, mixed, oatmeal, and fruits in apples, bananas, figs, peaches, pears, and plums.
Back to your question - if you do prepare theirs differently then freeze - just take it out of the freezer thaw overnight in the fridge; thaw in a microwave (half power) or place in some hot tap water. All these work find. But why not just feed directly from the foods you're having for dinner unless its pizza or some fast foods! In that case you can just boil a carrot, some peas, a potato maybe chop/grind mince some ham, turkey or chicken for baby all of these should also be pur?ed.

Usually freezing the baby food is done because at first you start with simple things...usually orange veggies or green veggies...like squash, green beans, peas, sweet potatoes...in simple form. Yes you could also make these things for yourself and feed the baby from the table after pureeing it but I can tell you some veggies make a whole lot of it. Freezing helps to keep you from wasting, and also for the covienience of future meals. There are a lot of things that a 4- 6 month baby shouldn't eat from the table when they are learning to eat solids.
Saying that a lot of babies also don't stay on purees very long and then of course some babies do. I had one who wasn't even on purees 2 months before she started refusing them and at that point we slowly started introducing table foods. Maybe I am missing something but in my experience it's not just as simple as offering from the table at first...there are things besides pizza and junk food that babies just can't handle at first.
This. If you use the silicon ice cube trays to freeze them one only takes about 30 seconds and two take 45-60. This was the best thing we did! I love it and have actually begun to give the stuff to do it as baby shower gifts.
Go ahead and grab butternut squash, pumpkin, (winter season veggies) etc now so you have it for later. DD never got it because it was out of season. We will soon see what she does with it. I am planning to make pumpkin ravioli for her.

I have been wondering the same thing and was just going to use the hot water method. Nice to know I can nuke it to if necessary.
I have read a lot of things saying it is okay to season the baby food you make. It seems that our parents' generation did not do this, but it's acceptable now. Except for salt. I DO NOT put salt in the foods I give DS. I have put cinnamon and/or a touch of nutmeg in the applesauce or sweet potatoes I make.
Also, Whole Foods has bags of frozen, chopped butternut squash for less than $3. I have used it to make soup and will use it for baby food.
