Question about what NOT to eat/drink

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.

I know there are a lot of things you cannot eat or drink while you are PG...what are they? Is coffee one of them? I'm sure it is....I'm thinking that I should slowly wean myself off so I do not go into complete shock when I do get PG. I drink a cup everyday. sometimes two. I know that's not much compared to some people, but I never used to be a coffee drinker until just about a year or so ago. Now I feel like I can't have a morning without it!

How about tea? & there are issues with certain fish & shellfish too right?

Sorry! Just my random thoughts for the day!

Re: Question about what NOT to eat/drink

  • You should limit your caffeine intake. I cut off any caffeine while I was pregnant. I did drink an occasional decaf cup of coffee. Not sure about fish and shellfish since I don't like any of it but I know of having high levels of something that could cause birth defects maybe?

I couldn't agree more!  I cut back my caffeine intake but still had the occasional cup of regular coffee every once in a while.  My doctor said that one cup a day was OK so I tried to cut back to once a week.  I ate everything that you "weren't" supposed to every once in a while.

BTW, here they recommend a pregnant women should have at least one glass of wine a week to help with circulation.  Everyone back home who heard thought I was NUTS, but babies are all born fine and healthy.

How did you do with unpateurized cheeses?  I totally failed.  I ate them probably once a week and I don't live in the land of cheese, bread, and wine...

  • My doc even said 2 cups of Joe was ok, but I skipped it in the 1st tri. After that I still had a half-caf each morning. I also skipped non-pasteurized stuff, just bc I thought that was easy. I also skipped lunchmeat & artificial sweeteners. Shellfish is actually GREAT for u while preg- it's fish with high mercury content you have to watch for. Teas are also questionable- the jury is still out on effects of those, so I skipped teas, too. HTH!
  • I didn't drink coffee until I was PG :)  During my second tri, I got bad headaches and the caffiene did the trick!  I only had one cup a day and it wasn't every day.  I've read that up to 3 cups a day is OK, but keep in mind that is is supposed to be a 6 oz cup.

I used to eat tilapia about 5 days a week and had to cut down to 2-3.  Most fish is good for you, but you have to limit it to 2-3 6 oz servings per week.  You have to stay away from the higher mercury fish like tuna and swordfish.

You should avoid unpaterized cheeses and uncooked pretty much everything.

I was strict about everything in the beginning, more lenient in the 2nd tri and by the 3rd tri, I was having a glass of wine every Saturday night.  And once I hit 35 weeks, I had a glass on Friday and a glass on Sat :)

  • I ate pretty much everything. Lunchmeat, coffee, some wine in 3rd tri. Just everything in moderation like Ashley said. I couldn't even FIND unpasteurized cheeses. all of the brie, goat cheese, feta etc that is available here is made with pasteurized milk. :)

Just be smart & do what feels right for you!

  • Red raspberry leaf tea is supposed to be really good for you!  I had 3 glasses a day from 30 weeks on.  It is supposed to help tone your uterus so it can work more efficiently , and make it less irritable to help prevent premature labor.  You can drink it hot, but I usually made it cold  with splenda and it tastes just like regular iced tea IMO.

And I agree with PPs - moderation, and I was stricter in first tri.  I avoided everything raw or unpasteurized, and lunch meat  the whole time.  By the end I was drinking soda on occasion, I think I had maybe 3 alcoholic drinks the whole time.

I also drank RRL tea.  I should have mentioned that in PP, but I was PFP (posting from phone!)

Did I use enough acronyms for ya???

I drank this at the end of my PG, too, because I read (even though I thought it was old wives tale type of stuff) that it could help in bringing on labor.  It obviously doesn't work since C was 8 days late ;)

I've never heard of RRL tea. I'll have to look into it.

Natalee....I love the pic of Caroline in your siggy! So cute!

I ate it on occasion.  There are women who actually can't "quit" so they make ALL pregnant women take the toxoplasmosis test every month to make sure you don't develop the infection.

What a PITA.  I guess I would be one of those women though.  HAHA.  I eat unpasteurized cheese almost daily.  So once a week was definitely cutting back.

The link from the mayo clinic said red raspberry leaf tea might cause contractions and gave me the impression NOT to drink it.  Is it ok at the end then or did I misunderstand it?

It's my understanding that you're just supposed to drink it the last few weeks.
