Baby Names

Tell me about this name please?

I met a family the other day with a little girl who they pronounced her name "Emry." I cannot find a girl's name anywhere that would be pronounced that way (I have no clue how they spelled it) but I have been able to find plenty of boy names that seem to the equivalent, like Amory, Emory, and Emery.

Does anyone have any information on a female version? Meaning, spelling? I like it pronounced "Emry" more than "Emory" or "Amory" if that helps at all?

I know you ladies are good at this stuff, and I'm sort of oblivious when it comes to names, pronunciation, origin, and meanings.

TIA!

Re: Tell me about this name please?

  • EMERY

    Gender: Masculine & Feminine

    Usage: English

    Pronounced: EM-?-ree  [key]

Norman form of EMMERICH. It was introduced to England by the Normans, and though it was never popular, it survived until the end of the Middle Ages. As a modern given name, it is likely inspired by the surname Emery, which was itself derived from the medieval given name. It can also be given in reference to the hard black substance called emery.

Although, I can't say I'm a fan of the name at all. It reminds me of an Emery Board.

  • Thank you. That was actually extremely helpful, and after reading that, there is actually a HUGE sentimental connection to something in the description, which I think made the name more appealing to me.

I agree, I have thought of  an Emery board as well, but I got past it pretty quick.

Would the meaning be the same for this as I have seen for the other spellings? Industrious leader, divine, brave, ect.
