Getting Started Running

So I need some tips for getting started running...

I've been doing low-impact forms of cardio but it's getting too easy and I want to start running instead.  Problem is, I've never really been much of a runner.  I don't know what is a reasonable goal to set for myself as far as time/distance just starting out.  Hoping some of you seasoned pros can help me out Smile

If it helps, I am in pretty decent shape and have good muscle tone.  My boobs have gone up to a DD since I started nursing though (used to be a C) so I could use some recommendations for a good sports bra as well!  TIA

Re: Getting Started Running

  • I would say the Couch to 5K program is a great place to start!

  • definitely recommend Couch 2 5K... i was never a runner either... always dreaded it in PE class!!  .... but this program changed all that immensely.  the first two weeks are really do-able.  by the third i started to feel like a "runner".  by the end, i was so proud of myself.  i moved on to Bridge to 10K too... it's amazing!!
  • I've never done any regimented programs for running, but that sounds cool.

My two cents.... Start with good tunes. Then get your butt out the door... for 5 minutes or 50, doesn't matter. Getting out the door is what matters. After a few days of this (three seem to be the magic number for me), it may start to feel more like part of your routine. Something you do, instead of something you want to do.

GL! And GL with the bra. I'm the last person on this board with advice on that!

  • For those who have tried this program........

I read that you run 3 times a week, can you weight lift on the off days or does that hurt your progress?

Lifting weights is fine, strength training should help you.

  • When I started, I just one day decided to run. Obviously it was a little bit of running and more walking, but slowly eased over to the opposite lol. Now after preg, trying to get back there. The couch to 5k looks like a good plan.
