STOP! Don't Buy That Breast Pump! Yet.

I went to a breastfeeding class at the hospital I will be delivering at and I was informed that MOST insurance companies cover partial or full cost of a proffesional grade breast pump. Also most hospitals have an "advocate" who will contact your insurance co. and see what their policy is and what they cover for you. These hospitals usually have the breast pump on location and if they get the OKAY from the inurance co. they write a perscription and have it for you before you leave the hospital.

So before you go out and spend a ton on a breast pump contact your hospital and see if they do this. They will most likley have a list of insurance co. that will cover a breast pump on hand aswell. Hope this helps!

  • I was so hoping our insurance would cover SOMETHING towards a pump, but nope.  The only time they cover anything is if I am discharged from the hospital before the baby (ie: baby is in NICU).

Unfortunately I will be out the full cost of these spendy little items.

  • Our insurance won't cover it as such, but if we wait until we have the kid, my dr can write a prescription for it and it'll be covered by our FSA.  Beforehand though, nope.

  • Yup, this has been a thread about once a week.  Every insurance is different, everyone needs to call about it.
  • OP said most insurances will cover some of the breastpump, yet this is what most people are complaining about. Mine won't cover anything. From my understanding, only a select few actually cover it.

This is true, it's very rare that they will cover anything, even $50

Agreed.  Still a great idea to check all of your resources before buying one.  I asked my FSA (nope) and my insurance company (they'll cover $50 toward it, whether I buy it now or later) and have been price comparing around online.

  • My insurance will only cover the breast pump if it is medically necessary, their example was baby being separated from mom.

This for me too.  Or if I have multiples.

  • Do you have to have maternity coverage to get the insurance coverage of the BP? My hubby and I dropped the ball and got pregnant before we added the coverage and now we are paying for everything out of pocket. But it would be nice to get a break on the pump if possible. Anybody know? I'm assuming no since they have been no help AT ALL in any other way.

  • I called my insurance company this morning and they will not cover a pump.   My flex spending account also will not cover the pump.  Looks like we will have to pay out of pocket!  I still believe it was worth the try!!!
  • I wish I had known this LAST year. My pump cost me $300
