I was sitting in traffic this evening trying to get home and I saw no less than 3 separate cases of adults smoking in cars with kids.
What? Do people not care? Do people love cigarettes more than their children?
It is absolutely appalling to watch this happen on a daily basis - I seriously want to get out of my car, knock on their window, and lecture them about second hand smoke and the health problems (LIKE CANCER) that it causes.
Do people not know that this is bad? Do they not care? I'm truly baffled.
And, it's not that I think smoking is a sin and, if you do that is fine. As long as you do it away from your children, and certainly not in the car. If you wanna smoke it up in the corner of a bar - whatever..your lungs. Or in the car by yourself? Don't care.
With all of the literature available to the general public, you'd think that parents would make better decisions but, in my eyes, they obviously love those cancer sticks more than they love their own children.
Why would you subject your own child to breathing in nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT. And over 590 more disgusting chemicals.

Re: I need to vent about smokers.
AMEN sister.
My mom is a smoker. DD and I went over to her place on Sunday for Breakfast. She was lecturing me on smoking. Um hello I've have never smoked, and I don't smoke now. I know the benefits of not smoking and I know what smoking can cause. So stop lecturing me. I really wanted to slap her. She goes outside to smoke, but seriously it's in your clothes, in your hair, all over your place. When DD and I got home, I took her clothes off, washed her coat, my coat, because we both smelled. I actually gave DD a bath too.
I just don't get it??? Why people smoke in front of their children? Why in the car?? Seriously are you that stupid! They just don't care!
well as you know I already responded on FB but I always have to pipe in on this topic whenever it comes up.
I don't give a crap if you want to smoke and kill yourself. Go right ahead. But do it AWAY from me, and especially away from your children. It was one thing to do it years ago before we have the research and data that we have now.....but seriously, knowing all the health problems attributed to secondhand smoke.....WHY?? Why would you do this??? It frustrates me to no end.
Smokers can be so incredibly in denial about their habit. And FTR I am an ex-smoker, I quit in 2003 and will never ever touch another one again.
And finally when I contacted my local politicians about this most of them were in agreement with me. I would LOVE to see Maryland pass legislation restricting smoking in the car with a child. Only one of them did not respond to me, and he is a crook who did not get my vote anyway.
I am not a smoker. Never have been and I find it to be a filthy, gross habit.
I think smoking in a car with a child is akin to child abuse and repugnant behavior.
Smokers have less and less places they can smoke (most public bars are smoke-free here in MD, it's a law that's been in effect for 3 years as of February) so I doubt there will be any more legislation as to where people can and can't smoke.
I just wish that if people smoked they wouldn't be able to get insurance coverage for themselves and limited insurance coverage for their family.
My FIL smokes and MIL has always made him smoke in the basement of their house (not realizing that the chemicals probably go up through the whole house, despite open window, air purifiers, etc.) DH has allergies and asthma... gee I wonder why?
I completely agree with you!
My best friend is a smoker, she's single, no children. She won't even smoke in her car if I'm in there because she doesn't want me going home to Dylan smelling like smoke! If someonw w/o kids can do that, I'd think parents can hold off smoking for a car ride w/ their kids (smoke 10 mins before getting in the car or after you get to your destination)
Exactly this.
Someone's getting a little brother!
Good for her! She sounds like a really good friend and all around gal.
Agreed!
So so so wrong. Smoking is a disgusting habit in general and then to inflict its many negative effects on children is sick. Some people really are just so selfish.
DH is a former smoker and since becoming pregnant he has quit, cold turkey for myself, our baby, and himself. I am so glad he was able to see past his addiction unlike some people.
Now we'll see how it goes when we go to IL's for the holidays where EVERYONE is a smoker...guess I will bring my gas mask
