We have our first 6 month IEP review coming up on the 22nd. I scheduled the appointment and we got our meeting notice from my son's SPED teacher.
Now I am wondering.... Is it OK to request a head of time a summary of what will be discussed as well as request a summary of any changes, if applicable, that they want to make to his IEP?
I am the type of person that needs a little time to think about things, so I like to try to prepare ahead of time if possible. What has your experience been with this process? Is a summary ahead of time a reasonable request? I have a great relationship with my son's SPED teacher and she is all about communication, I am just not sure if this is necessary...
Re: 6 month IEP Review
I am a SPED teacher, and yes it is ok to ask the teacher for these things. Keep in mind that she/he might write back and say that it will be a review and all changes will be brought up to the team as a whole. Just please remember that if you need more time to digest the changes, dont agree to anything and ask for another meeting. I have been to plenty of meetings where the parents needed more time to digest things, so dont be afraid to ask for more time
Yes, this is an actual IEP meeting. His IEP was written in May, and in our District (maybe this is standard), we also do 6-month reviews to make sure all is going well and make changes if necessary. I got my official meeting notice on Monday, stating all of the team members that will attend, etc.
My son is in school readiness preschool this year. They do parent days in the classroom in the fall instead of conferences in our district, so it is not a school conference.
I guess I will make a request and then just also go with the flow of the meeting, but not plan to sign anything until I have some time to let it digest. Thanks, ladies.
You can certainly request these things but they may not have something to give you... in my district when there is a review it is the team discussing the student. Changes are recommended, discussed, etc.... at the meeting when the whole team is present. Then you will receive a copy of the new IEP with any recommended changes in the mail. You can then take your time to read and decide if you think the changes are appropriate. If you consent, you sign the IEP and send it back. If you don't consent you do not have to sign and you can reconvene the team to discuss further. Until you sign the new IEP the old IEP remains in effect.
Good luck and hope this helps!
I am a SPED teacher too and it sounds like to me they are doing progress reporting. On your team meeting there should be a statement of the purpose of the the meeting. If your son is not making adequate progress on his goals or theres a change in services they will ammend the IEP to change the goals so they are attainable in the year or make the change to the services. After the meeting you will receive a Prior Written Notice, in this notice it will highlight what was discussed at the meeting and any changes that were agreed upon or proposed at the meeting. Once the Prior Written Notice has been sent by the district you then have 14 days to respond, if you agree or disagree, if there is no response the changes proposed will go into effect after the 14 days.
If it is a review like you stated, I have a feeling they will mainly be reviewing his goals and objectives. I would review your copy of the IEP and maybe the evaluation before you go in, and even bring it with you to jot notes down.
