Anyone else recommended to have a fetal echocardiogram?

I was because of a history of congenital heart defects in the sweet babies born into my maternal side of the family.  Has anyone else's MD recommended they get one?  I can't remember what week my MD said and I'm trying to plan.  I'll call tomorrow, but now I'm curious and google is not answering my question.

  • Nevermind...Children's Hospital of Boston recommends at 18 weeks.  I think I gave up my search too early.

  • I was as well. Mine is starting at 20wks. My reason is rather traumatic though. I had a son in April who had an irregular heartbeat and past away 7 days after he was born.(not due to the irregular heartbeat) Now I'm 12wks! I'm high risk and my doctors are being very cautious with me. Good luck to you and it's for the best!

  • I wonder if I should ask about this?  My daughter was born with a heart defect, but it healed by itself with in her first 3 months.  Thoughts?

  • I am having one - slightly high NT which increases my risk (or rather the baby's) of a CHD. I'm scheduled for 22 weeks - they told me between 20 - 22 so they can have a very detailed look - before than he said some part are not visible enough.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Best wishes for a H&H 9 months.

I think it depends what her defect was.  If she had a patent ductus arteriosis or atrial septal defect I don't think they recommend an echo because those are normal physiological elements in a fetus's heart.  However, they still might want to do it to check for other issues.  I would definitely ask if your physician has not brought it up.

Thank you!  18 weeks did seem early, but I thought Children's Hospital of Boston would know.

  • I am going to have one soon.  My HR specialist said we would do one at 20 weeks, but my regular OB said around 22 or 23 weeks.  Now that I don't need to see the HR specialist any more I think mine will be closer to 23 weeks.  Good luck!

  • I would page bumpie Buckets of Moonbeams on 2nd/3rd tri and send her a PM. I know she has had several.
  • I wonder if this will be recommended in the future for us.  DH's sister was born with VSD (actually 2 holes in her heart).  She never had surgery and they closed on their own in her late teens.
