1st childbirthing class last night and feeling confident :D

Last night, DH and I went to the first in the 4-part series of Preparing for Childbirth classes offered at our hospital. It was so great, and I left feeling like I can totally do this!

I was so pleasantly surprised at how encouraging they are for mothers who want to try to deliver as naturally as possible. The RN who teaches the classes has been doing this for 35 years or so, and she's also a certified doula. She was all about letting your body do what it's meant to do, and that's totally my birthing philosophy. And, she's available to us during our labor and delivery. Of course, she also explained that we have the option of epidural and explained the different meds.

Plus, she showed us the lactation room and told us about the lactation consultant on staff, the pumps available for rental, how the LC will fit us for BF bras and help us pick out the best bras for our bodies, etc. We're also signed up for the Breastfeeding class, so we'll learn a lot more about it then. I'm really excited about this, because I have so many questions, since I have to go back to work 8 weeks after I deliver.

We're also registered for the Infant CPR class and the Preparing for Natural Childbirth class. I'm just so excited at all the resources we have available to us for free or dirt cheap.

Oh, and when we were leaving, a baby had just been born, and we all watched the nurse take care of him through the nursery window. DH said, "OMG, are they really that tiny?! I can't believe how small they are!" It was really cute. :)

  • Wow, our birth class experiences were opposite.  They were definitely pushing for epidural at mine.

    Aww, that sucks. :(

Ours basically said, you can certainly have an epidural if you need/want it, but here are all the things you can try to avoid an epi. She also encouraged intermittent monitoring so I can walk around, and a hep lock instead of a conventional IV. I was seriously so surprised at how supportive they were of all these things.

When I asked about the hep lock they said that I won't need to walk around if I get an epi... I asked about intermittent monitoring and she said that they won't offer it to me, but I can ask for it.

Essentially, because I'm delivering at one of the top hospitals in the country and because they do all the very high risk patients they are less used to non-high risk people.  Their "comfort level" as she kept calling it is a lot higher, more invasive.

I'm basically preparing myself to fight with them every step of the way.

  • DH and I have been to two child birth classes. We've also really enjoyed them. They also encourage natural birth but also discuss having the epi or other meds. That class is next week.
