Nurseries and Baby Gear

Coming out of lurkdom to ask for help! (Nursery related)

Hi! We are in the very early stages of getting our baby's room ready. I wish I was confident enough to trust myself more, but I'm just not. We plan on getting custom made bedding from Etsy, so since we won't be able to return it, I need all the help I can get! We are transforming our movie themed game room into a nursery. We worked REALLY hard to paint it and it looks great, so we want to leave it the same color. The bottom half of the wall is cream  and the top half is red. Since the colors we're choosing are so bold, I'm afraid that the bedding could look really busy and circus-y. That's what I'm trying to avoid. The fabric we like for the bumper is #5 on this page. https://www.etsy.com/listing/58146834/design-your-own-custom-crib-bedding-set?ref=sr_gallery_34&ga_search_query=cottage+belle&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=3&order=&includes%5B0%5D=tags&includes%5B1%5D=title&filter%5B0%5D=handmade

Is this already looking circus-y? With our babyletto crib, you won't be able to see much of the skirt, so I don't guess I have to be too picky about it. I guess what I'm wondering is, since the bumper is so bold with all the colors, should I stick with solids with the inside of the bumper and sheet? I don't really know what I'm asking, I just need help! Thank you!

  • I don't think its too much like a circus if you keep everything else simple.  My curtians are similar look with different colors.  I made sure the rest of the room was very simple with accents of the different colors.

I will say that $190 seems crazy to me for a bumper and crib skirt.  I didn't shop for sets and opted not to get a skirt since we had the drawer under our crib.  Maybe I'm just not aware of prices but that seems really high.

  • I think that it's a really cute pattern but I think that the price is WAY too high for just a crib skirt (which you won't even see much of) and for bumpers which in my opinion are a waste anyway (and a SIDS risk).  If it were me I'd have the seller make a sheet out to of that pattern instead.

  • Thank you! That makes me feel better.

You're right, $190 would be INCREDIBLY high (for me at least!) I don't know why it's listed as that, but the bumper and skirt are actually $85 each. So, that seems a little more reasonable. And the only other thing we would need is a sheet and they are just $25.

$85 + $85 = $190 so buying them individually is the same price as getting the set.  And $25 is crazy when your baby is going to puke and poop on them at least once or twice.  I would look for a friend or try a class to learn to sew.  Both of those items are straight lines and would not be too hard to make.  You could buy the fabric or something similar and save a TON of money.  Then accent with crib sheets that are much cheaper.

I did end up using a bumper at around 7 months.  LO started to roll over and would end up with her head against the rails and kicking.  I came in the room one night and both legs were hanging out of the crib.  I trust that she can roll over and I made sure that the bumper is secure so she can't pull it off.

  • a) I love the fabric.

    b) you can make a crib skirt for like $20, tops.

  • I really like the fabric and think it's fun, and not circusy at all. I agree that as long as you keep everything else simple, it will look great. I would use this fabric for the crib sheet, and get a plain crib skirt made. You don't need a bumper (major SIDS risk) or half of the stuff included in bedding sets, so I wouldn't waste my money.

Oh, I thought you thought that it was $190 each for the skirt and bumper, ha. Thanks for the tips! I'll have to look around!

  • I think there are some etsy sellers who will make you a set if you send the fabric.  That may be a cheaper way to go.  I also noticed that you live in Atlanta.  There has to be someone in your area that does this.  Check with a Joanns, Michaels or Hobby Lobby in your area.  Often the people who work there sew on the side.  I would go in and ask the girls in the fabric or sewing machine area.  You might also find a fabric that is similar at one of these stores and then sign up for their fliers.  They have sales all the time and you can get the fabric for 40% off.
  • I think the fabric would look fine with your paint colors as long as the rest of the room is simple.

Have you checked out javisdavis.com?  They do custom bedding, and I think it might be a little less expensive than your etsy seller.  I believe babybedding.com also has custom bedding.

    85 +85 = 170.  Just saying.  It's still expensive, though.

  • Yeah, that seems sort of high to me. I do love the striped fabric, though. You might be able to find somebody to do it cheaper if you send fabric. A skirt really only needs a few years of fabric and a piece of muslin in the center.

We just bought separates, no bumper. So we have a skirt, a sheet, a changing pad cover and a couple of soft fabric baskets. Didn't even get the quilt, although we may in the future. I think all of that was around $150.

Our sheets were crazy expensive at 38 bucks, but it was organic and we only got one. The other two we own are cheapies in around the same color - - I think we paid 15 for both.  And the crib skirt was under 50.
