cold turkey or wean?

My almost 2 year old son is taking 4-6 sippy cups of Pediasure a day.  We have no idea how much of the 2 snacks and lunch he actually eats at daycare.  The pediatrician had recommended the Pediasure or Carnation Instant Breakfast at his 18 month visit since he was continuing to drop on the growth curve for weight.  He was 25-50% for height and 5-10% for weight.  Since then, our son has gained about 3-4 pounds.  Despite trying to offer him regular food first, he still seems to prefer the Pediasure in the sippy.  Any suggestions on how to transition?  We don't want to have to cart a huge box of Pediasure on our vacation in January.  TIA!

Re: cold turkey or wean?

  • Since you have some time before your vacation, I would gradually introduce more foods (bonus if you know that he likes them) and less pedisure - or mix some pedisure with milk, until you eventually are just giving milk.  You can also try to wean him onto Carnation - since the packets would be easier to carry.

Here is a good post that gives you some good food items that might help keep up the weight gain w/o lugging around the pediasure:
