3rd Trimester

2 possibly stupid questions

1. In WTE it briefly mentioned that too much movement can be a sign that baby's in distress. I asked my doctor about this and he said no that it's the lack of movement that concerns them and an active baby is a happy baby. Has anyone heard any different? LO tonight seems to be insanely active... has been moving a lot all day but for the past half an hour it's been pretty much constant and some of the movements as quite painful. I'm sure its normal but I guess I just wanted peace of mind again. (I also tried to google it and it only came up with inactivity as a negative sign)

2. At my appointment this after the doctor did an internal and said I was 2 cm dilated and that he physically touched the baby's head. DH asked a question at that point and the subject got changed. I should have asked my doctor but before I knew it the appointment was over..anyways, if the doctor touched the baby's head does that mean I would be 100% effaced?

  • I've never heard of activity being a bad sign.

You can be dialated without being completely effaced.

  • I have also never heard of activity being negative. It just varies from baby to baby, and from day to day. Probably don't worry too much about that one.

And ditto to being dilated before effaced. I am still not completely effaced, and my MW has mentioned being able to feel her head for weeks.

  • Right movement is always good. You know your baby is olay by the amount of kicks. When the baby becomes less active is when you should contact you doctor.
  • Hey LB!

My doctor HATES WTE because he says it always makes you think of the most ridiculous worst case possible.  I've been told that activity is a good thing :) and to only be concerned when LO's activity decreases significantly for a few hours at a time.

I have no idea about the effacement though

  • Thanks ladies. I had looked it up on google too and I cant seem to find much that says there is anything to worry about with too much activity. I kept telling myself that but I have just never had LO go nuts like he/she had been for about 40 minutes or so and I got a little paranoid (I'll blame lack of sleep). I think LO is finally starting to calm down a little though lol.

  • Not sure about your second question, but did you have a lot of sugar or caffeine before the baby started moving like crazy?  Because that'll do it every time.  If you had a few sodas or some ice cream or something, that'll often make a baby more active.

  • I'm not effaced at all, and my OB can feel babys head already.

  • My doctor also specifically told me NOT to read WTE (I did anyway, with a promise to myself that I wouldn't get freaked out by any of it).

My LO was super active last night too -- it was my fault for having a chocolate pudding right before bed.  At my last U/S, the technician told me that sugar and alcohol go right to the baby immediately through the bloodstream (unlike other food/nutrients which have to be digested first and go through the digestive system).  So if you had any sugar, that could explain it.
