Implementing a pump with newborn?

Now that my milk has been in a week I feel like I'm constantly engorged. My little man is a good eater and is already up 5oz from his birth weight...which is good considering he was 10% down right before my milk came in. So, my breasts feel constantly engorged. Seems like he doesn't need to nurse as long. He usually is milk drunk after 10 minutes or so...sometimes it's a struggle to get him to latch on the other breast for another 10 minutes. It initially feels good but soon after I feel so full but he's conked out.

So do I try and pump a little to relieve myself? Will it just set me up to produce more milk? Should I give it a bit and let the boobs and the baby regulate themselves? This is pretty overwhelming. I just don't know what to do. Advice is definitely welcomed!

In the first few weeks I made it a point to pump so that I could build up a stock pile and I still have a ton in the freezer so DH and I can go on dates and she has BM to eat.  Also I found that as DD grew and I stopped pumping my supply regulated itself.

  • If you want to build a good freezer stash, yup, pump yourself empty. However, this will make you produce more milk. Which you will really appreciate when you want to have a stash built up, but it does mean that you'll have to stay on top of your pumping in order to not get engorged.
