Interesting "Fact" about teething from pedi

We took DS to the pedi today because he has just not been acting like himself the past few days. He has been fussy and having monster meltdowns to the point where he is inconsolable.

Anyways, the pedi said he didn't think it was teething. He asked us if we knew when we had started teething because apparently a child usually starts teething around the the average of the times their parents did. Interesting, but I don't know how factual it really is.

  • My mom was a late teether, I was a late teether, and pedi is pretty sure Lisee will be a late teether too!

  • I have heard this - not from our pedi but in general from several sources.  My mother has no idea when I got teeth and I don't think we ever asked MIL about DH but DD didn't get a tooth til almost 8 months so I won't be surprised if DS is similar

  • I got my first tooth at 4 months and DS got his first two at 3m 3w
  • Hmmm, not sure when I got mine. But Josie was 12 mo when she got her first, praying it goes the same way with Asher. To this day, I have never known when she has a tooth coming. I think the older they are, the better they can handle the discomfort. Fingers crossed!

  • Interesting! I got my teeth really late and so far none for Jack

  • So did the doc figure out what's going on with your LO?
  • That is interesting.  I will have to find out when I got my first tooth.  MIL said DH got his first tooth at 6 weeks, but DS is almost 5 weeks and no teeth yet.
  • My Mom told me that my sisters and I were early teethers and funny enough, my sisters twin boys cut their first tooth at 4 months and my DD cut her first 2 bottom teeth at 4 months, 3 weeks. So there might be some truth to it.

  • I had heard this before.

According to my baby book I cut my bottom 2 teeth at 8 months, so we'll see if that holds true for LO.  No idea when my H cut his first tooth.

  • It holds true for us...DH cut his first at 3 months and DD has her 2 front teeth cut already. The first one cut at 2 months, and 3 weeks. I was dumbfounded that she had a tooth through already.

  • I don't know when I actually teethed since being the 5th child, my mom was done keeping track of milestones in a baby book. I do know I was born with a tooth but I don't think that has anything to do with teething.

    Wish I knew :(

  • I was 10 months, DD was 13 months...DS doesn't have any yet.
  • So what would happen if mom was a late teether but dad was an early teether? Would LO be a "middle" teether?

  • Yikes.  Apparently my teeth did not want to come in at all.  At 13 months, the ped had to scrape my gums (i guess to stimulate them?) which got one to appear.  This was back in the mid-70's though so who knows if they still do that.  I don't know about my hubby.  I'll have to ask the MIL.
