Re: nbr: homemade gifts

  • I look at it like this, a gift is thoughtful regardless if they spend $5 or $50.

  • I picked other, because it totally depends on the gift.  If it's a handmade item that I can tell someone spent quality time thinking up and making I'm so honored to receive it.  For example:  my SIL has made the most beautiful crocheted blankets and hats for DD.  I absolutely love them and we use one of the blankets every day in her carrier.

I have also gotten some really stupid handmade stuff that makes me question what the giver was thinking.  I have a handmade Christmas sweatshirt that looks like the giver just bedazzled it and ironed on some Christmas themed patches...everyone else at this family gathering got one, too so it's not like the giver just thought "oh, Amelia would just LOVE this bedazzled sweatshirt!"

HAHA, amelia!  I see what you are both saying.  I was thinking of doing a few homemade gifts (won't have time to do many!), but I didn't want people to think I was just trying to avoid buying them something.  I *know* it's not about money, but I want people to be excited about their gifts too.

  • I picked thoughtful but I can see where Amelia is coming from too.  I so far have always loved handmade gifts...I love the fact that someone took the time and effort to make it.

Like my favorite b'day present Aubrey received hands down was the painted rocker my sister in law and niece made for her.  And a good friend of mine made her a gorgeous stained glass bunny window hanging for my shower last year.

I think if you want to make gifts then go for it!

  • I think thoughtful, but also agree it depends on the gift.  I am planning on doing some goodies for neighbors/coworkers, but I think homemade gifts for close family should be more personal (i.e. crocheted hats/blankets or wooden rockers).

Jaxon received a beautiful wooden rocking horse for his birthday from my cousin.  I love it and know he spent a lot of time and effort into making it perfect.

What did you have in mind?  Just fishing for ideas ;)

  • I picked other for similar reasons as Amelia...

I think they are thoughtful most of the time - several of the handmade items I received for Mitchell I really love.

But quite a few times I've received gifts from friends or relatives that are just trying to "peddle" their stuff. (If that's the right word).  Like they just want everyone to know this is something they're doing and seek to eventually profit from it.  While I'm all about being supportive to new business ventures, you could just ask me to help spread the word and I'd gladly do it. But don't disguise it as a gift, especially if you don't know if it's something I'm "in to".

    KWIM?

  • I think handmade gifts are better because they are more thoughtful... as long as they are gifts that you think the people will like. (ie, no bedazzled sweatshirts, lol.)

I generally try to make gifts every year, because it's something I enjoy. In the past I've sewed my niece and cousin little monogramed A-line dresses. I've painted a banner for my SIL's wall and an oil painting of a relative's home.

This year I bought some artsy black and white architectural photos that feature a letter in each photo (you frame all the letters to spell out the last name.) I then made a couple frames using some spare trim I already had... and voila. I'm also sewing some drapes for my mom's christmas gift and probably taking Kennedy to a pottery place so that she can "paint" a mug for DH.

Lindsay - this year, I was mainly thinking of doing drawings...I have a few ideas for family initials/monograms/etc.  last year, I made candles and soaps for everyone.  one year, I did personalized (stamped) notecards that were a HUGE hit!

mrsAO, I totally get what you're saying too!  great ideas Lydia!
