Baby Names

boy names: Teague or Blaise?

Teague (pronounced teeg)
or
Blaise (pronounced blaze)

These are my 2 boy names.. and the only ones my husband likes. Which do you prefer? Even if you don't like them, pick one please :)

My hubby likes Blaise the most, but it means "one that stutters." After he read that he doesn't like it much anymore. Is the meaning such a big deal?

  • Yikes! Both names are bad and scream uneducated teen mom. I honestly can't choose one, but I like the pp suggestion of Teegan.

  • I love Blaise.  It's a classic French name with great historical figures attached to it.  I think only the uneducated would think it looks uneducated.  The "stutter" meaning wouldn't bother me.

I dislike Teague.  Teagan is much better.

  • Just because a name is not commonly used in the US does not mean it "screams uneducated." Actually the opposite. I usually hear that comment from people who only like names they've heard of before. These names are unique. And they're actually very old, classic names in Ireland (Teague) and France (Blaise). I don't really like Teegan.. I've heard it too much to like it, and I just don't like the sound of it either.

  • I think they both are horrible.... I do like Teagan much better...
  • Definitely Teague.

I wasn't trying to be rude by suggesting Teegan, I just prefer it to Teague.  I think you should go with your first pick and not worry about the meaning.

  • I've heard them both, but I have to admit I still really dislike both names. Of the two, I guess I'd go with Teague.

  • I like Teague better, although I think that you will constantly be telling people how to pronounce it.  I know that the spelling is totally different, and obviously the meaning is different, but I can't stop thinking Blaze from American Gladiators.  Not being snarky, just honest.

  • I like Blaise best.  It may mean "stutter" but it is also the name of a saint who is the patron saint of throat ailments. So I'd go with the fixing the stutter angle when telling people what it means :)

  • Teague is my maiden name so I have a hard time with it as a first name, however, my sister did name my niece Teagan. I think of Teagan as a girl name and can see Teague as more masculine.  Pronunciation is not usually a problem.  I would just say "like League, with a T".  I would definitely choose Teague over Blaise.
  • Blaise. Who cares about the meaning.

  • I like Blaise better than Teague. As for the suggestion of Teagan, I know two little Teagans and both are female.
  • I think I'll go with Teague....

I also love Blaise.........I also agree that only the uneducated would not understand the history of this name..
  • I don't like either of them...they may be old names, but they sound pretty trendy to me, which isn't my style.

If you look at the people using the name Blaise (in the US) it is mostly uneducated teen moms at least where I am from. The fact that it is a "classic French name" is irrelevant because this isn't France! I am assuming the OP isn't going to be raising her child in France either. You have to consider a name within the context of the society in which you are raising your child. This seems pretty obvious to me.

I also agree with these statements.  I prefer Blaise, only because Teague sounds a bit feminine to me (because it's similar to Teegan, which tends to be a girls name).  The only Blaise I have ever known came from a very wealthy family.

  • Love Teague, it hubby's mn.

    This is how I feel.

  • I think they are both great, but since I have to choose one, I am going to pick Teague.

How do you look up the age and social status of the mother that has used the name Blaise. My children go to an up-scale Catholic school with very educated Drs and Lawyers and that named is used there. Most names have a European history .......but we still use them here and it is OK.

Where does someone get off telling someone else their choice of name is uneducated? I believe she asked which name you like better, not do you think these names suck and are dumb choices? Would anyone want to be told that honestly? Think before you speak/type. I prefer Teague. :)
