Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

A little over a week ago I noticed that I was having a hard time moving my legs without feeling extream pain in my lower abdomen and groin area. Over the following days it got worse and worse to the point where I couldn't get out of my car when I came home. So the next day I called my OBGYN and she told me to go to the Labor and Delivery for a labor check.

Well baby was fine and I was not in labor but I was diagnosed with Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. It occurs when your body releases too much relaxin to your pelvic muscles when getting ready for birth so it begins to hurt.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what to do for any relief. I heard of some kind of band that you can wear for some relief but other than that I kind of just have to deal with the pain. I'm just thankful there is nothing wrong with baby.

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

  • I think there are a few of us dealing with this. I have good days and bad days. On days when I walk a lot or am on my feet, I can barely move by the end of day. Putting on and taking off pants is the WORST! As is getting in and out of the shower and in and out of the car. I did buy a support belt from Motherhood Maternity, and it does seem to help a little bit, but it is not the most comfortable piece of clothing.

  • Hmmmm maybe?  I'm not really sure what my issue is and my OB wasn't sure either.  It's really only at night for me, but after I've been laying down, I have the hardest time moving at all.  Moving my legs (like to get out of bed) sends awful cramp like feelings through my abdomen.  Is that what you are feeling?  I also have, what I think is, awful sciatic nerve pain, again typically only at night.
  • have had it since week 16, it's lovely. I have a maternity band, it helps if I am going to be walking a lot but it is not comfy to sit with. There's nothing you can do and the pain will not go away until after you deliver :-(

  • My boss had this and this what actually made her stop running and begin swimming. I think she tried an SI belt (the serola one is my favorite because it's low profile) but I can vouch for how well I helped. But maybe look into it? Hope your able to find some relief. I've heard it's awful!

More like someone is taking a pair of pliers and prying your pelvis apart. Sorry to be so graphic but that's what it feels like!

ladipale- agree pants and underwear are the worst. Also, moving from my left to my right side in bed sucks as well.

Yes, it's unbearable. I have been in tears every night for the last week because I am in so much pain. My pain is mostly in the hips though. I am having trouble walking, and I wake up in the middle of the night in pain. Sometimes I stand up and I feel like my legs will not hold my weight. I can't believe I have to endure this for 9 more weeks. I went to the chiropractor yesterday hoping that it would help some. He works with a lot of pregnant women and said that it usually takes at least 3 weeks to feel some relief.

  • My OB mentioned this to me today as well. She pushed down on my lower groin area and I about passed out. If I sit in one spot for a while or when Im in bed, I can barely move. It really feels like you are going to split in half down there..so painful! Some nights I dont know if I will even make it to the bathroom. I hear its from the excess of the hormone relaxin.

  • Thanks I had no idea so many of us have been dealing with this. IDK about any of you but I feel so useless. I have so much to do still and I can't move half the time. Its horrible. Thanks for the tips though! I will be keeping all of you ladies in my T&P's.

  • Me.

I had it with my 1st pregnancy and now again with this one. It sucks and nothing helped me until I delivered.

I can't even go grocery shopping for very long or I'm almost crawling back to the car. :(

  • Ideveloped it at 24ish weeks. When I went it, the dr did an internal and then felt my pubic area and it was horribly painful, but at least I got some validation. He doesn?t even call mine SPD, he calls it pelvic dislocation, which actually a diagnosis above SPD, but I just simplify.  The dr wasn?t particularly helpful in terms of advice, but at least I felt validated and made sure the problem was what I thought it was and not something else.

He said the two best-feeling things would be to be on all-fours and to sleep in a recliner position. I do both.  I did the recliner position with like 7 pillows then some friends lent me their fancy pillows. So, I put a wedge under my back and the snoogle under my knees (so they stay bent) and around my left side and then under my back to keep me in one place. I also put a second pillow under both my knees and head. I am considering borrowing a recliner from a friend for the days I work from home bacause sitting in a chair gets to be painful even though I alternate between a normal chair and a balance ball chair.

Laying on my side has became impossible after a few weeks with it. I didn?t do it before much because it hurt, but now it literally makes me want to scream.

I have heard that seeing a chiropractor can help. Another thing I?ve heard is to squeeze a tennis ball below the knee, at the knee, and above the knee for five seconds at each place as a good way to keep those muscles strong since squatting has become excruciating, but is great labor prep. I can also do modified squats with my knees facing more to the front and with holding onto a support. (We are doing the Bradley Method, which is big on squats.) Walking?with small, slow steps?also is amazing. It causes dull pain, but inactivity causes me sharp pain when I get up. So, I pick the dull pain and the overall health benefit that walking still has.

The Prenatal Cradle Plus V2 belt is helpful, though I do not wear it every day. On desk-work days I skip it because it is uncomfortable to sit in.  Also, our floors at home are wood and springy and gentle on my body?especially when I wear shoes. Oh, that is a big thing I?ve just learned?shoes really help cushion things and keep the pain away for longer. On active days at work when I am on my feet a lot (and on the unyielding floor, which is carpet over concrete slab), the belt makes it MUCH better.

This website is one of the first things I found that was helpful. While this is a lay-person?s site, her tips on keeping legs together when getting in and out of the ca and bed, sitting when putting on pants, etc. are little things that make a big difference: https://www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/pubicpain.htm

Swimming and soaking in the tub also feel great.
