Babies: 6 - 9 Months

rejecting bottle....help!

My son is 6 1/2 mths old and is completely rejecting the bottle.  He was just taking one 1 1/2 wks ago and now he dosent want anything to do with it.  I have even had my husband try to give him one when I am not around and he wont take it. He either screams or plays with it.  anyone have any advice on how they got their baby to take a bottle again.  My son is primarily breastfed but would like for him to take a bottle so I am able to leave him with a sitter if necessary.

 HELP!

  • My LO refused bottles at 4 months when we started daycare.  My dad was finally able to get him to eat if he played music whlie he fed the bottle.  Daycare finally got him to eat by feeding him when he was just waking up from a nap and sorta out of it.  Two things my lacation consultant suggested: have the person feeding him wear a shirt of yours or drape a blanket you've slept with over themselves so LO smells you.  Otherwise, you might try tansitioning straight to a cup.  GL

  • He could be teething possibly.  I have heard LO's do this when they are teething.

At your LO's age that is.

  • At your son's age I'd just try going straight to sippy cups.  DD's favorites are the Take & Toss brand.  Let him play with it for a few days w/ just a little water and you have to be patient and kind of show him how to use it.  It takes 2-3 weeks for them to really get the hang of it.

  • I posted a similar issue this morning:

I just ran out to BRU and bought the Avent Magic Cup and a Tommee Tippee cup to see if he'll take those better.  It's SO frustrating when he won't take a bottle :(

  • Try switching up how he gets a bottle - DS went through a phase where he didn't take a bottle (and still won't if I'm in the house).  He doesn't like to be held at all.

We also have experimented w sippy cups & have found that the tommee tippee one is v easy to get liquid out of.  At your DS's age, I'd go straight to a sippy.

  • My lo refused a bottle for 2 months. She now takes one because I offered it to her immediately after cereal. She doesn't love them but the transition to solids has made her open to a bottle again....thank god! Good luck

  • Thanks ladies!  I appreciate all the great advice.  I wiill try the sippy cup route.  I dont think he is teething/sick because he eats like a champ but just dosent want the bottle.
