TTC After a Loss

What would TTCAL do regarding medical records?

So, I mentioned yesterday that I am switching OB's and they need all of the medical records from where I was being seen previously.  I could either pick them up or have them faxed over.  I am wondering this...

a) Pick them up and rifle through them all the way over to the new dr, when am I ever going to have the chance to see them like that again?!  BUT, what if I find something in there that I don't know mentally if I could handle as in the gender  of my 1st pg?  I remember a gal on here months back that was in this same position and really had a tough time with things now that she knew the gender  of her 1st pg!!  Mentally that would set me waaaay back trying to deal with the loss(es.)

b) Have them fax it and save myself a world of grief..!

What do you think?  I am really at a loss here..

  • Personally, I would fax them over. You are moving into a new chapter and positive direction with a new Dr. Let this be a new start, where you are NOT setting yourself back!! Good luck.

  • I would pick them up and review them especially if you haven't seen your medical records in a long time or at all.  It will give you an idea of exactly what your new doctor is reviewing and if there are things in there that you have questions about you can also ask your new doctor.

I guess as far as things like seeing the sex of the baby from your first pregnancy, just know going into it that you may see some triggers and hopefully that will help quickly put that piece of paper aside.

  • Have them faxed over and save yourself.

I work for a large physician's billing company and I have access to my medical records every day.  There are things you might not want to see.  If you feel that it'll set you back in the healing process than I'd just have them faxed over.

  • Ouch! That's a tough one. Reading between the lines, it sounds like faxing it over would be the best option. You can't un-learn any information you find, and if you know it would upset you, I would avoid that heartache.

By not reading through it, you are making a choice to move forward, and it sounds like that is what you want to do, even though the curiosity is SO hard to ignore.

Good luck with your decision! :(

  • I would have them faxed. Plus a lot of times if records are going doctor to doctor, its free. But if you take them personally they may charge you per page.

  • I find the records facinating, but just what the PP said, you can't unlearn what you read.

I had to get the delivery notes from the hospital to submit so I could prove I was hospitalized to receive my short term disability and one of the dr's notes said "Patient is visibly upset, crying at this time.  Responds appropriately to questions"   For whatever reason, that statement is burned into my brain.  "Patient is visibly upset"  well, no sh!t.  You told me 15 minutes ago that the baby had passed and I was going to have to go through labor and deliver.  No stinkin wonder I'm upset!  Geesh.

  • I truly don't know what to do with this one, there are valid points to both sides..

  • Me personally, I'd read them.

For your own mental health... I'd fax them, if there is a chance it will set you back in healing, just don't do it. Unless you are mentally ready for what you might read, it seems like uncessary pain.

  • I would definitely pick them up because I want to know what it says. If you think it will be detrimental to you, though, have them faxed.

  • I got mine mailed to my house and then I brought them to my new OB. I say pick them up and look at them--or maybe have your DH or a friend look first so you don't get blindsided. Can you get them a couple days before your appt?

I just like knowing everything, so that's me.
