Is this ridic?

So, I wear K all the time.  She's happy that way.  Even when we sit on the floor and play she only wants to do it for a little while.  She would rather be up walking around.  So I wear her.  We take walks.  I do my chores.  It is good.

But I can't help but wonder, if I wear her all the time when will she learn to crawl, walk, or pull up?  Is it possible to wear her too much?

Or am I just being a paranoid first time mommy?  Feel free to tell me I am being ridic.

Re: Is this ridic?

  • I wore Alexa all.the.time. Still do (obviously not as much). She started crawling at 5.5 months and walking at 10. I think they are going to learn their milestones on their own time.

You're being redic lol :) j/k  You're a great Mama for wearing her!

  • Obvioulsy I have no baby yet, but, I would venture to say, you wearing K isn't going to hurt her crawling or walking.

At some point, Kiki is going to want to gain her own independence.  Eventually she's going to want to crawl and walk and I'm sure she will let you know when she's ready to start trying.

  • Well, I am a paraniod first time mommy too, so this answer probaby doesn't help much, but I would worry about that too.  I keep worrying that all of the time we're keeping R off her back & in propped seats (because of her flat head) will delay her.  I worry that being in her exersaucer where she can't see her legs will slow down her motor development.  Who knows.  I have absolutely nothing to base any of that on (well, I think the exersaucer thing has been proven, but I haven't read anything about using carriers excessively, etc).

Kim, you scare the crap out of me when you say that Alexa was crawling at 5.5 months.  I am so not ready for R to become mobile in the near future!

  • I don't know the answer, but I think you are normal. I worry about the same thing. I think Briley learned to creep/crawl/whatever she does by moving around her crib.
  • Oh, I also wanted to say and forgot until I reread what I wrote...

I absolutely don't think you're being ridiculous though.  I know I'd have the same thoughts.

  • If you're ridic, then so am I.  I wear Mari all.day.long.  Literally.  We have floor play in the morning and in afternoon (usually at Gymboree) and in the evening, but all other times that I'm not out walking with her, I'm wearing her - especially doing my chores and cooking.  I think the same things...  specifically about her crawling.  She's not crawling at all yet and even though I know all babies develop differently, it's kind of disheartening when I see all her Gymbo friends crawling all over the place.. and I always have to wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

I'm sure you already know this, but a lot of kids are skipping the crawling phase, & I don't think they even count it as a necessary milestone anymore.  Kids spend so little time on their bellies because of the back to sleep campaign that many never get comfortable being on their stomachs to learn the skill.  My BFF's daughter was walking at 10 months, & didn't crawl until 13 months.  No worries!

ETA: Remind me of this in a few months when my kid isn't crawling. :)

  • KiKi will be 8 months old on Sunday.  K isn't crawling.  She doesn't roll back to belly either.  She hates being on her belly.

There is only one kid at Mommy and Me that is her age and is army crawling.  When I see how fast he goes, I get a little excited that K still sits in one place when I leave the room to grab somthing.  I know we're nearing the end though.  She attempts to pull up on everything, she only gets herself up half the time unless she is at her toy box.  Then it is all the time.

  • Don't worry about it. Every baby is different.

I'm sure her Pedi has repeatedly told you not to worry. Continue to keep them informed, and stop worrying. If by 1yr there is still no rolling over/crawling/hitching talk to a Developmental specialist about exercises you can do w/ her.

if you're worried about too much wearing, add a little more floor time each day. When she gets upset, make a big deal about encouraging her, and get down there with her. Try changing the surface you have her on. She might like foam mats or different textured blankets. Choose a toy, or grab a new one that is only for floor time and play w/ it every day.

We do this.  We play on the floor for about an hour every day.  In a different room.  On different surfaces.  With differend toys.  I just don't know that it is enough.  I did get a book rec for different exercises we can do while we do floor time to help her develop that are age specific for each new skill.  I think I am going to the library to get it today.  If I am doing appropriate exercises, Hopefully I won't feel so bad.

  • Ashley , I feel like you beat your self up so much on this. You are such an awesome mom. Karter thrives in so many ways. I think the book is a great idea if it will give you peace of mind, but I'd she never crawls, that's fine too. The mist important developmental milestone in her life right now is bonding with you and Timm, and I know you guys ate hitting that one to a T.

    You're probably right.  Sigh.
