I'm getting ready to sign up for our gas service.
What is a good gas rate to lock in at?
Should I do the cheap introductory rate and then lock in?
What times of year do the rates typically increase?
TIA
I have been monitoring the rates for a couple of months in anticipation of ours expiring 12/1. I have been getting a lot of letters from companies trying to lure me over. The going rates seem to be about $.69-$.75/therm. Although, I just locked in $.63/therm (Coweta Fayette EMC) so the others might be coming down as well. If you are going to switch now, I would probably go ahead and do a 12 mo rate, then next year arond this time you could switch again.
I do wonder how other companies knew our rate/contract wasing expiring? Or, if this is just the time of year when they all start sending out rate flyers trying to get us to switch since cold weather/higher gas use season starts up?
I don't consider myself an expert though so don't necessarily listen to me. haha. For the last 7 years while in SC our home was heated by electric. So, this last year has been my only experience using gas.
I came across whitefence.com and they have discounted package rates.
Infinite Energy is .619 for first 2 months and then locked in for the remaining 10 months at .689...I'm thinking of taking this. It would be great to have Dec and Jan at the low rates.
The Coweta rates are awesome--too bad I can't get them in Decatur.
Scana is offering 63 cents/therm in Fulton and I believe GA Natural Gas is too. I believe you have to have a code that was on the fliers though. Keep an eye out in your mail and be sure to sign up before the deadline for the next month. We missed it and had to stay on our old provider at the higher rate in November.
DH works for one of the providers. The current rate is .71 cents/therm without any discounts. If the rate changes, it is usually around the first of the month. September/October is usually the cheapest time to lock in and rates will typically start increasing with winter coming. And nope, the providers don't have any way to tell when a resident's contract is due unless they ask and you tell (except for your current provider of course).

I haven't actually looked at this link yet, but have it saved and on my to-do list, but here you go:

I came across that special promo on Clark Howard with Atlanta Natural Gas
https://onlygng.com/EarlyBird/
.599/therm locked in for a year--prices are good until 12/4. You just need to mention: EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT
They will also pay $50 towards breaking the contract with another provider.
