How do you bring 2 kids in to daycare?

DD is 13 months now and is walking fine, but I usually carry her into daycare since it's faster and easier. She will be 15 months when DS is born...how do I get an infant in a car seat and his diaper bag, and my toddler and her bag into the daycare? I obviously can't leave one of them in the car. Am I going to have to haul a stroller in and out of there every day to get everything in one trip? I don't think I could carry two diaper bags and a baby in an infant carrier, and hold my DD's hand while she walks. HELP!

  • When I have too much to handle with DD I bring her in first and then the stuff.  You could wear the LO and then hold DD's hand...GL!

  • Won't LO #1 be 2 months older when you start taking 2 to daycare?

LO #1 should be old enough to walk holding your hand, and shouldn't have much more than a lunch bag to carry most days (you may even be able to convince her to carry it herself too); and then you carry LO #2 in w/ her bag.  I'd probably leave the car seat in the car.  Worst case scenario, you take them both in, take them to their rooms and then go back tot he car and come back w/ their stuff

  • Do you have to take diaper bags every day?  I leave everything I can at daycare (or even drop stuff off in the evening when I pick him up) so that I don't have to lug as much stuff every day.  By the time you start going, DD should be able to walk and hold your hand.

  • First off, try to limit how much you bring in each day by leaving stuff at daycare if possible.  Also, what I did was leave the bags in the car and get them later.  I would usually take at least one bag with me (the one for the child most likely to cry upon seeing me again, usually meaning the oldest) and go and fetch the bag.  While DS was in the infant car seat (so the one you carry), he was last in and first out, because in his car seat, he wasn't going anywhere.  I made DD hold my hand by saying it was safety time.  You can also use a harness or leash if you are concerned.  but I usually got her contained first.  And while it is hard, you will find that yes, you can carry both a toddler and an infant car seat at the same time.  You just do what you need to do.

  • My situation is a little different but DS2 just started walking last week so I understand the challenges getting in an out of daycare.

When they were little (not walking at all) but too big for their carriers I did bring the double stroller in and out everyday.  It was a PIA but it allowed me to get them both in at the same time.   Another twin dad brings the kids in then does a second trip for the gear like pp suggested.

If you have a single snap n go you could click the carseat in for the baby and hang the baby's diaper bag & DD lunch on the stroller and hold DD hand.  Ask if you can store the snap n go in their storage closet so it will be there for pick up time.  It will be slow in and out (I know it takes us forever) but at least you can get do it in one trip..

  • I haven't started yet, but have been picking up DS#1 with DS#2 in tow.  I have one diaper bag big enough for everyone, an I pick that up and sling it over my shoulder, take DS#1 out, have him stand on the sidewalk while I take DS#2's carseat out, put DS#2 in the crook of my arm, and hold DS#1's hand with the other hand.  It's not that bad.  I can even carry DS#1 if need be.  It's one of those things that sounds bad until you do it.  Good luck!
  • I put DD#2 (in her infant seat) in the snap and go.  Bags go in the bottom of the snap n go before I put the car seat on.  Then I get DD#1 out of the car and either carry her in one arm while pushing the snap n go or let her walk holding my hand.

  • Before I was back at work, if I did pickup when DS was with me, I did use a stroller.

But now I usually hold DS or put him in his infant car seat.  DD walks holding my hand with the bag-- she's been doing this for the past month.  We've tried to get her excited about being "Mommy's Little Helper" and so far it has worked.  I will say getting from the car to daycare is the worst part of my day-- it just feels stressful, but it is getting easier.  DH doesn't use an infant seat, and sometimes DD asks "Daddy hold TWO babies?!"

You older LO will grow up a lot in the coming months and you'll just figure some things out, so don't stress too much about this.

Yep, I didn't know how I would do this, either... but it can be done. And when Jack is not wanting to walk like a big boy, this is what I do! I've even carried him a short distance at the grocery store and WalMart while wearing Cooper in a carrier... now that is a sight. Smile

  • My DD is a little older than yours, but I just got her out of the car and then carried the infant seat, I'd hold DD's hand if she wanted to.

I also brought only one bag for the both of them.

  • ditto pp - drop off big/heavy stuff when you do pickup, so you aren't trying to carry it and kids.  I do diapers/wipes always at pickup.  For drop off, I carry DD in her infant seat and DS holds my hand and walks.  I have the minimal stuff in a bag slung over my shoulder.

It's tough b/c DD is getting very heavy in the carrier and DS walks so slow.  I am worried about winter because DD won't make it through in her carrier and certainly won't be able to walk.  Sadly, there isn't enough room at my DC for a stroller or I'd try that...

  • Can you leave your car at the curb?  I got DD a rolling small backback and she is responsible for pulling her own bag. however if she won't I just have two backpack type bags and sling one strap on one shoulder and the other strap on the other shoulder.  I put DS's carier in the crook of my left arm and hold DD's hand with the right.  And try to park as close to school if possible. If it's raining I park at the curb illegally and run in. Other parents do this too. The circle drive is wide enough for a car to park and other cars to still get by.  I didn't do this when I had just one but right now I feel justified.
  • When DS was born I had to take him with me to do hte daycare run for DD. I wore DS in an ergo, carried a bag in one hand and held DD's hand with the other... except that DD is very very clingy in the morning, so often I ended up carrying her on one hip. I did not take in the carseat.

Now that DS is older and can cling to me so it's easier to carry him I just carry him and the stuff... and sometimes I still carry DD too.

DD is 37lb. DS is 21lbs. I have to take a bag for DS every time because we use cloth diapers. So yeah, you can carry a lot more than you think you can. Make baby's diaper bag a backpack and it'll help some.
