Anything I can do about a KGer waking up too early?

DS is my champion sleeper.  Out like a light btwn 8:00 and 8:15, but was always a bit of an early riser and usually up by 7 am.  Once he started school he was sleeping until 7:30 (yay!).  The last week or two he's staying up later (on his own, just not falling asleep after lights out) and is waking up before 7 am (I have no idea when, he's coming in my room before 7, but could be up earlier playing in his room).  He is not functioning well, at all.

He hasn't napped since he was 3 and doesn't get home from school until after 4 anyway, so napping isn't really an option.  Is an earlier bedtime my only option?  I'm thinking about telling him he has to stay in bed with lights off until 7 am too.  Please tell me this is a short phase!

  • I've heard of a lot of people buying one of those clocks that has a day and night timer.  If you set it to 7AM and tell him he can't get up for the day until it reaches 7AM, it may help.

As for bedtime, I would suggest starting bedtime earlier.  Maybe try 30 minutes earlier and see if that makes a difference.  He may not fall asleep earlier, but the extra "rest" time may make the difference.

  • I have noticed DS getting up a bit earlier, hopefully it is just a phase.   However he isn't outside as much and isn't as active when he is inside more, so that might play into it.

  • Hi,

I had the same problem when my daughter was in K last year.  She has shades in her room that let the light through, especially when it was Daylight Savings Time last fall.  So, instead of purchasing expensive drapes for her room, I opted for a super soft, pink eye mask!  It is pretty funny seeing her sleep with it on, but it WORKS.  It is a very cheap fix! Might be worth a try....
