Pregnancy congestion (2 questions)...

For those of you who have had congestion as a result of pregnancy, what has it been like?

I've been ridiculously congested for about two months, and sometimes it's pretty dark in color, often containing blood.  Sometimes blowing my nose causes fresh bleeding.  This is not normal for me.  But it's also about the time we moved into a new house, so it could be something with the air quality or allergies and not pregnancy related.

This leads to my other question, which is: If you're pregnant and suspect you might be sick (my husband thinks I might have a sinus infection, but I don't feel sick... just the above issue), do you call your OB, or do you go see a normal doctor and just make sure they know you're pregnant and are limited in terms of what drugs you can take?

Re: Pregnancy congestion (2 questions)...

  • I put DDs elephant humidifier in my room and it has helped a ton! And yes, I have had it on and off my whole pregnancy. Same with DD1 pregnancy.

I would call my regular dr if you want to. I bet it's not a sinus infection though. Just good ole pregnancy related fun!

  • I have officially been a snot monster since day 1....I don't feel sick at all, just can't breathe out my nose.  and I get nosebleeds every few days...and I sneeze constantly.  but, my mother said the same thing happened to her.

I personally have talked to my GP and she says it is totally normal and won't get any better....

  • I have a horrible sinus infection right now. I called my OB and they told me to try Claritin and it didn't work. So then I moved onto Sudafed and it really doesn't work either. I went to my PCP and they wouldn't give me jack saying that I can't have anything and blah blah. So then my face pain was unbearable so I called my OB back and they called me Zpac and I am feeling much better now on day 3. I would call and see what they say. I never had sinus issues like this with my first pregnancy so idk if mine are related to being pg or just the darn weather.

  • Regular doctor, although some won't even see pregnant ladies!!  So ask when you call just in case.  Then, I would check with your ob or pharmacist if they also ok the drugs your doc prescribes.  I had one prescribe me 3 drugs, 2 of which had much safer versions. I've used a neti pot, too.  It's not painful, but also not pleasant, but can help.

  • I have this too.. You would call the reg drs... I went 2 weeks ago for a bad cough, and he put me on a z-pak which is safe in pregnancy... but for my nose it did not help so i blame that on the pregnancy which I have had off and on for about 5 months now!

  • OK, thanks, guys... I feel better hearing that so many of you are experiencing the same thing.  I've just ordered air purifiers for our house and for my office, so we'll see if those make any difference.  Maybe I need a humidifier, too.  I will feel a little ridiculous with a space heater + air purifier + humidifier in my office all going at the same time.
  • I have been congested for quite awhile too but no other symptoms. I too have a humidifier (a penguin that will be the baby's) in our room, it does help. Also a hot shower in the morning clears it up as well.
  • Lots of sneezing, runny nose, recently the bloody nose thing started. I sleep with a cpap machine that automatically is a humidfier, it doesn't help.

  • Totally have the same thing here - even work myself up snorting (not snoring, but actually a lout enough snort to wake me up...) three nights last week.  Then Thursday night, I woke up unable to catch my breath, so I was starting to worry I was getting pregnancy related sleep apnea.  But then I've been okay since then, just the stuffy, bleeding nose and congestion.

I read only 20-30% of pregnancies have it - I didn't get much morning sickness, so I guess this is my payback.

  • I've had a lot of runny/stuff nose issues since I've been pregnant, too, and I've just been using a saline nasal spray morning and night and that has really helped.  Before I started doing this, I had a lot more congestion and blood from my nose being so dry, but the saline has helped a lot.  I also saw a pp mentioned that she uses a humidifier - I would imagine that would help, as well, because it keeps your nose from drying out and becoming congested and bloody.

  • I definitely have the "pregnancy congestion" as well. For me, it's only in the mornings when I wake up (and if I wake up in the night I can tell I'm stopped up). Once I'm up for about an hour or so, it goes away. I have also had a little bit of bleeding here and there from my nose and I've never had that before, but I attribute it to just everything going on.

If I thought I was really, legitimately sick, I'd go to my regular doctor and just make sure they knew I was pregnant. I have had to come to terms with my new "normal" self which has a stuffy nose every single morning and then if it doesn't go away by mid-morning, then I consider it to be something else.

  • I've had the wonderful congestion on and off my whole pregnancy however it has just been clear or refusing to come out my nose and just drains down my throat at night. . .ewe

As for the Dr I would just go see my regular Dr and make sure they remember I am pregnant.

  • Seems to be quite normal with me too. With this pregnancy I have started using a Neti Pot, even though I was so against the idea before, and it has been a life saver.  It doesnt hurt and whenever I start feeling a bit congested, It reverses everything.

    Hope you feel better!
